Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Kallax shelf from Ikea because I really appreciate its flexibility and simple design. However, I’m now facing a problem that makes me somewhat uncertain: I don’t have enough space in the room to install doors on the shelf, which I had originally planned to make the storage look more closed and protect it from dust. Now I’m wondering if the Kallax without doors is really a bad investment – will the open storage bother me in the long run because of visibility and potential clutter? How have you solved or experienced this? I would appreciate any advice and experiences, especially regarding whether open Kallax shelves can be practical if you skip the doors. Thanks!

I understand that it can be disappointing at first when the doors don’t fit. I had a similar experience when I left my Kallax open. At first, I was unsure, but step by step I learned to appreciate the open look. Sometimes the open shelf can feel a bit overwhelming because everything is visible, but it also motivates me to keep things tidy. Maybe it would help you to get some nice boxes or baskets that still create a neat appearance. 🙂
That’s great that you got a Kallax! I really love my open shelf unit! Of course, without doors the contents are visible, but it makes the space feel lively. I have my favorite books, plants, and boxes in it – it looks really nice and feels very cozy. 🙂 Just imagine how convenient it is to access things without having to open doors – it’s a real gain in comfort!
Regarding the topic of Kallax without doors, I would like to share some practical tips:
1. Organization: Use folding boxes, baskets, or decorative storage containers to keep individual compartments neat.
2. Sorting: Arrange items by category or frequency of use to keep frequently needed things visible.
3. Visual screening: For particularly cluttered contents, you can add fabric panels or decorative dividers.
Many buyers confuse the lack of door coverage with a lack of tidiness. In fact, an open shelf requires more discipline, but with the right tools, it becomes a very flexible storage solution. Doors are mainly for appearance and protection – so without them, it is not a poor purchase, just a different way to use the unit.
If doors don’t fit due to space limitations, you can still make the shelving very attractive by using boxes and clever styling.

I had exactly the same situation – no doors possible. At first, I thought: bad purchase! But no, I discover new advantages every day 🙂 An open shelf means you can keep an overview. With colored boxes or decorations, it looks really great. Just get creative! The Kallax is very versatile; you can do a lot with it.
