Hello everyone, I have an issue with my IKEA KALLAX shelf where one of the shelves broke due to excessive pressure. Specifically, it is the large, standard shelf panel that simply couldn’t support the weight of a heavy load. Now I’m wondering if anyone here has experience with how to obtain replacement parts for these shelves? I’m not looking to buy a whole new shelf unit, but rather just a replacement panel for the KALLAX. Are there official replacement parts from IKEA, or perhaps alternative sources? I’m also interested in how sturdy the original shelves really are and if there are any recommended upgrades that could serve as suitable replacements. I appreciate any tips—thanks in advance!

IKEA rarely sells replacement parts for KALLAX directly. The best approach is to contact customer service or look up the order number for the shelf online. Alternatively, sometimes the bottom panel from another shelving unit of the same size will work. For added stability, you might also consider MDF boards that can be cut to size.

As a supplement: IKEA offers replacement parts only to a limited extent. This means replacement shelves for KALLAX are rarely available directly, and exchanging individual shelves is generally not supported. That is why the question here is important:

In practice, it is recommended to replace the KALLAX shelf with alternative, custom-cut panels made of wood-based materials. MDF panels with a thickness of about 15-18 mm (0.6-0.7 inches) often provide greater load capacity and can be cheaply cut to size at hardware stores.

Technically, the original shelves are glued and not very thick – which makes them prone to breaking under heavy load. If IKEA cannot supply direct replacement shelves, this remains the usual solution.

It’s interesting that the KALLAX shelf gives way—or rather snaps—under too much pressure. IKEA furniture is often said to be quite sturdy in terms of stability, at least within the lower price range.

That sums it up well. You could almost say that the choice of a thinner shelf is intentional, encouraging users to buy a replacement when higher loads are applied.

Instead of spending a long time searching for replacements at IKEA, I see it pragmatically: anyone looking for a truly stable solution should take the initiative and source the appropriate wood-based material themselves. In the end, I believe this not only saves money but also saves nerves and time.

Hello everyone, I would like to add a brief guide because the topic of shelf breakage due to overloading keeps coming up:

1. Check the condition: Often, cracks or breakage are caused by localized overloading, meaning heavy items placed in one spot.

2. Replacement procurement: Since IKEA rarely offers replacement shelves for KALLAX, ordering replacements through IKEA customer service is difficult.

3. Custom cutting: It is recommended to use MDF or plywood with a minimum thickness of 15 mm (0.6 inches), which can be cut to size at a hardware store or lumber specialist.

4. Protection and stability: If desired, edges can be protected with appropriate paint or edge banding to prevent moisture from penetrating and to extend the shelf’s lifespan.

5. Pay attention to load: Consider the maximum weight and its distribution. A stronger shelf won’t help if the load is only applied in the middle. It’s better to distribute weight evenly.

Summary: You probably won’t get replacement parts directly from IKEA, so investing in a high-quality custom solution is recommended. If possible, take exact measurements of the old shelf for the best results when replicating it.
