Hello everyone,

I have a somewhat specific question regarding the KALLAX shelves from Ikea: Is it possible to purchase additional shelves for an existing KALLAX unit in a different color than the original?

Specifically, I have a white KALLAX shelf with white shelves, but I would like to add extra shelves in black to create a more contrasting design. Does anyone know if Ikea or other retailers offer these shelves with color options, or is it necessary to use replacement shelves that match the original color exactly?

I appreciate any helpful answers or experiences on this topic—thanks in advance!

Ikea usually sells the KALLAX shelves only in the color that matches the unit. Buying additional shelves in a different color is generally not possible.

Alternatively, you can look for shelves that fit independently of Ikea or paint them yourself.

That is correct. KALLAX shelves are generally color-coordinated with the existing units and are only offered as replacements in the original colors.

An alternative would be to use suitable shelves from third-party suppliers that have the same dimensions (approximately 33cm x 39cm (13 inches x 15 inches) for the middle shelves). It is important that the load capacity is adequate and the edges fit precisely.

Painting or applying adhesive coverings in a different color is possible but should be done carefully to avoid warping or wear.

In summary: Direct replacement in a different color through Ikea is not available; third-party options or custom modifications are the common solutions.

That’s brilliant, you can create really striking contrasts that way! 🙂 IKEA can be a bit rigid, but that’s what makes it exciting – getting creative yourself and experimenting with colors!

I’d recommend being bold and painting the shelves yourself, for example with a matte finish. That way, you can not only choose the exact color but also create a great surface texture.

Don’t worry about the effort; it’s definitely worth it and looks fantastic in the end! Good luck with your project! :-)
