Hello everyone,
I’m currently facing an annoying problem and hope you can help me. I recently bought a KALLAX shelf from IKEA and assembled it on my parquet floor, attaching it to the wall. Unfortunately, I’ve noticed that the feet or edges of the shelf have damaged the parquet in several spots – some are light scratches, while others are small dents or impressions in the wood.
Since my parquet is quite sensitive, I’m now wondering:
What options are there to repair or at least minimize the damage caused by the KALLAX on the parquet? Do you know if special protective mats or felt pads are effective and sturdy enough to prevent further damage? Or has anyone had experience with treatments for such scratches and dents on parquet? Also, I’m curious: should I place the shelf on a protective underlay, or is it enough to improve the feet?
I would appreciate practical advice and your experiences – especially regarding how to avoid follow-up damage.
Thank you!

oh no, that sounds really frustrating! 🙂 To start with, you can definitely try attaching felt pads to the edges – these are often available at furniture stores or even IKEA. They absorb the pressure pretty well and prevent new scratches.

Are special protective mats or felt pads effective and durable enough to prevent further damage? In my experience, thick felt pads work well. They do compress a bit over time, but if you check and replace them regularly, they hold up great. Protective mats are nice and also prevent dents, but they often don’t look as good and can slip around – which can be annoying.
And of course, placing the shelf on a thin, hard underlay helps distribute the pressure better. For example, I used a thin plastic sheet between the shelf and the floor – it spread the load very well and protected the floor.
You can repair scratches themselves with special parquet markers or oil – depending on how deep they are.
All in all: felt pads plus an underlay are your friends! 🙂 Good luck with the repairs!
Hello ditan,
I’m happy to provide you with a structured answer, as the topic of parquet floor care around furniture is really important.
1. Damage assessment:
- Scratches can often be repaired with a special wood care pen or parquet touch-up pen. There are various shades available to match your parquet flooring.
- Indentations are more challenging. If the wood surface is not cracked, they can be somewhat reduced by lightly dampening the area and ironing it (using a damp cloth in between). But be careful not to over-wet it!
2. Protective measures for the future:
- Felt pads under the furniture feet are highly recommended. Make sure they are thick and durable enough. Self-adhesive felt pads in suitable sizes are commonly available.
- You can also place a thin, sturdy plastic or rubber mat under the shelving unit to distribute the pressure over a larger area.
3. Alternatives:
- If the KALLAX shelving unit is attached directly to the wall, you could try lifting the feet off the floor, for example with small furniture casters or wooden blocks, to avoid direct contact. This is a bit more involved.
In summary: first repair the small scratches with appropriate products, equip the shelving unit with felt pads, and use a protective mat if possible. This should better protect your parquet floor in the future.
Good luck!

And what I’d like to add: Check if the feet of the KALLAX shelf are really even and stable. Sometimes the original feet made of wood or plastic don’t fit the floor perfectly. An uneven base increases the risk of pressure marks.
In the end, a combination of felt pads and underlays usually works best. This way, you can hopefully protect your hardwood floor in the long term and enjoy your KALLAX in peace. Good luck! :-)
I just wanted to say that I completely understand your problem. You don’t install hardwood flooring only to damage it immediately when assembling furniture.
I went through the exact same situation some time ago and initially wondered whether I should take the shelf apart and move it somewhere else. What really helped me was simply using thicker felt pads under the feet and regularly checking to make sure everything stayed intact.
There are also special repair kits for wooden floors that can effectively hide fine scratches. It feels much better when the floor doesn’t look worn down anymore.
Keep at it; it’s worth it and definitely don’t despair. Hardwood flooring requires maintenance, but with a few tricks, you can usually restore it. 🙂
