Hello everyone,

I’m currently facing a small problem: I bought a Kallax shelf from IKEA, but when transporting it into my apartment, I realized that it doesn’t fit through the living room door. Unfortunately, the door frames are slightly narrower than the width of the shelf, and assembling it in the hallway or stairwell isn’t really an option due to the dimensions.

My specific question is: What is the best way to remove or modify my door to get the Kallax shelf into the room without any issues? Is there a simple and practical way to take the door off its hinges or even adjust the frame without having to call a professional? I do have some tools at home, but I don’t want to just start experimenting and risk causing more damage.

I would be very grateful for helpful and practical advice! If you have experience with removing interior doors or know useful tricks, I’d be interested to hear how you handle this kind of situation.

Best regards,
mayano

Hey, that’s a classic problem! The Kallax is great, but doors don’t always love it ;-)

In general, you can easily lift the door off its hinges by loosening the hinges (those metal parts on the side) a bit or—depending on the door—simply lifting the door upward out of the hinge pins. Some doors even have clips on the hinges that you can lift to release them.

If you’re unsure, it’s a good idea to put a small towel or blanket under the door before lifting it, so it doesn’t slam down too hard. Alternatively, you can pry the door off the hinges with a screwdriver, but be careful not to damage anything.

When it comes to the door frame, it gets trickier, and I’d generally advise against removing it yourself—unless you’re really handy with tools 😉 Often the easiest solution is to have a helper hold the door briefly while you take it off.

Good luck, and if you want, feel free to share how it went! :-)

Here are some technical details: A standard door is usually attached with hinges, which are either fixed with pins or mounted permanently. The easiest way is actually to remove the door leaf from the hinges – if the pins are not glued in, you can gently tap them out with a hammer and a punch or screwdriver.

It is important to support the weight of the door with one hand to prevent it from falling uncontrollably and causing damage. This is especially true for solid wood doors, which can be heavy. If the door has aluminum or plastic cladding, be careful not to handle it too roughly.

Also, be cautious with hinges that have a security function (e.g., security hinges on apartment doors), as these cannot be removed so easily.

If you want to modify the door frame (for example, if simply removing the door is not enough), it is advisable to carefully remove the trim (e.g., moldings) around the frame with a handsaw or multitool. This allows you to slightly widen the frame, but it is a more complex task and requires some DIY skills. Make sure to measure exactly how much space you need beforehand.

One more tip: Sometimes it helps to disassemble the Kallax shelf first and carry the parts through individually, then reassemble it in the room.

How wide is your door exactly, and how wide is the Kallax? Maybe we can give you more precise instructions.

A small note: Before you simply alter or remove the frame, be aware that the structural stability of door frames can be significant in older buildings. This means you might create a weak point if you interfere without a proper understanding of the construction.

Your most important consideration should be whether the door and frame are load-bearing or just a simple opening frame. You can find this out, for example, by closely inspecting or asking the local building manager or contractor.

Because that would be the most elegant solution – it would eliminate all modifications to the door.

If the Kallax really has to go through the door in one piece, the most pragmatic approach would be to remove the door. However, I would feel much more comfortable intervening in the masonry frame only if there are assurances that no structural damage will occur.

Don’t forget: After the door is removed, it must be reinstalled securely and without damage.

Another aspect – is the door too small just because of the actual door leaf width, or are skirting boards, door frames, or room corners also in the way? Sometimes, removing skirting boards or the lower decorative trim is enough to gain a bit more clearance.
