Hello everyone,

I’m considering leaving the bottom section of the KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA open, meaning without the standard doors or drawers. My question is: “Does a lot of dirt and dust tend to accumulate over time in the open compartments at the bottom of KALLAX units?”

I know that furniture with open surfaces tends to collect dust more easily, but I’m especially interested in experiences from people who use the KALLAX shelf this way. How much maintenance does it require? Does dirt build up noticeably, or is it generally manageable and something you get used to? Could leaving it open also help make the room look more spacious if used cleverly?

Looking forward to your experiences and tips!

Hey, great question! I also have my KALLAX open at the bottom without doors – and yes, dust does build up, that’s just how it is with open shelves. But honestly, I don’t find it too bothersome since I usually just wipe it down whenever I notice dust.

The advantage, as you mentioned, is that the open look feels much airier. For me, it also makes the furniture piece feel more lively, especially if you add decorations or nice baskets. 😊

If it really bothers you, you can always use baskets or boxes with lids – that way the dust stays out but everything remains easy to access. I mix and match both options depending on my mood.

From a factual perspective, open compartments in any furniture, especially those near the floor, are generally more exposed to dust and dirt compared to closed ones. This is because air circulation and the lack of barriers encourage the settling of dust particles.

In the case of KALLAX shelves, the bottom compartments are close to the floor—a level where dust is usually higher due to foot traffic and elevated dirt levels. As a result, cleaning effort and dust accumulation are noticeably greater there.

Recommendations:
1. Regular cleaning at least once a week.
2. Using dust covers or baskets can help reduce dust buildup.
3. Floor-level compartments should not be used as the primary storage for sensitive items.

Conclusion: Yes, dust and dirt tend to collect more in these areas, which is not a fundamental flaw but rather a characteristic of the furniture and its open design.

I completely agree with that :-).

I left my KALLAX units open at the bottom, and honestly, yes, dust does get in sometimes – but it’s not a big deal. If you dust or vacuum regularly, it’s manageable. You can find a nice balance between clean design and practical use.

Personally, I like open shelves, especially to display decor items or books. Cleaning is a bit more effort, but the space feels more open as a result.

Additionally, I use baskets made of natural materials, which add a cozy touch and also help reduce dust because they’re not completely open. 🙂

I would agree with that. Open shelves, especially the lower ones, definitely tend to collect more dust and dirt.

If you leave them open, you should plan to spend a bit more time on maintenance. Otherwise, baskets or boxes without doors can help – they do let some dust in, but it’s much less visible and the shelves still look airy.

If dust is really a big issue for you, then doors are probably the better option.
