Hello everyone,

I recently ordered a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA, which unfortunately got some edge damage during transport. Specifically, there are several small to medium chips along the cut edges—especially on the corners of the upper shelves. While the damage doesn’t directly affect the stability, the appearance is quite unsightly, particularly because these edges are often visible.

I would like to know if anyone has tips on how to carefully and permanently repair such edges. I am mainly interested in practical solutions that are not too complicated but still provide a neat result. Experiences with certain wood repair kits, varnishes, or fillers would also be helpful.

Looking forward to your advice, and I’m happy to provide more details if needed!

I would repair it using wood filler. Simply patch up, sand, and paint with a suitable paint. This usually holds well and results in a neat appearance.

Hello lemaximili,

for a clean repair of KALLAX edges, I recommend the following steps:

1. Preparation: Carefully remove any loose parts or splinters from the damaged edge.

2. Filling: Wood filler works well, especially types that can be sanded after drying. Apply it to the damaged area with a small putty knife, making sure the filler slightly overlaps the edge.

3. Drying: Let the filler dry thoroughly according to the manufacturer’s instructions, at least several hours.

4. Sanding: Smooth and level the repaired area flush with the rest of the edge using fine sandpaper (e.g., grit 180-220).

5. Painting: KALLAX shelves usually have a white melamine coating. For finishing, water-based acrylic or synthetic resin paints in matching white are suitable. Apply thin layers and allow them to dry well.

6. Safety: Ensure good ventilation when working with filler and paints.

If the shelf will be heavily loaded, adding an edge protection profile (made of plastic or wood) might be worth considering to prevent future damage.

If you need more detailed instructions on specific products, I’m happy to provide more. Good luck with your repair!

Hello lemaximili,

your question about repairing the damaged KALLAX edges is actually quite complex, since IKEA furniture is usually produced cost-effectively and the particleboard is covered with a melamine foil. This means that repairs on the edges always carry the risk that the material in this area will not hold as well as solid wood.

For your repair, I recommend considering the following technical details:

- Material analysis: KALLAX edges are mostly made of particleboard with a thin melamine coating, which tends to peel off at damaged spots.

- Repair method: Treat the damaged melamine edge with wood filler and an adhesive compatible with melamine. Regular wood fillers may not adhere optimally. There are epoxy or resin fillers better suited for stable repairs on coated panels.

- Sanding & sealing: After drying, be sure to sand the surface with very fine sandpaper to achieve a smooth finish, then seal it with a suitable acrylic or resin-based varnish.

- Alternatives: If the damage is larger, flexible edge profiles made of PVC or self-adhesive edging strips can also be applied. These prevent further damage and look professional.

I’m curious: how large are the chips exactly (in cm)? Are the damaged edges load-bearing parts, for example a support shelf, or just for appearance? This will help plan the repair more accurately.

I look forward to your details so I can possibly assist you more precisely.
