ᐅ Kallax Dried with Hot Air After Water Damage – Still Structurally Sound?

Hello everyone,

I recently experienced a severe water damage event in my apartment, during which my IKEA Kallax shelf got quite wet. To prevent further damage, I tried drying the shelf using a heat gun. Now I am wondering: Is the load-bearing capacity of my Kallax shelf still reliable after this heat treatment?

The shelf is made of wood particleboard, and I’m concerned that moisture combined with the heat treatment might have compromised its stability. Perhaps someone has experience with a similar situation or can advise whether I can continue using the shelf safely, or if it’s likely that the material will warp, weaken, or even become brittle due to the drying process.

I appreciate any assessments or tips!

I would add that especially the fasteners (wooden dowels, screws) could lose their hold due to moisture followed by heat exposure.

Thank you for pointing this out—I hadn’t really considered that before. I will inspect the joints more closely to see if they are still secure or if they are starting to come loose.

A functional test under load is recommended.

What load limits would you roughly consider critical? So far, I have only loaded the shelf lightly and want to use it for as long as possible without having to replace it immediately.

Good question! Official data on the Kallax is hard to find since IKEA does not publish load-specific information related to water damage. Normally, a stable Kallax shelf can hold about 13–15 kg (29–33 lbs) per shelf, evenly distributed. After water damage and drying with warm air, I would recommend not exceeding 50–60% of the original load capacity — so around 7–9 kg (15–20 lbs) per shelf.

It’s best to test with light items first and gradually increase the weight. If you notice the shelf starting to bend or feeling unstable, you should definitely stop to avoid long-term damage.

It is also important that the joints remain stable, as weak connections often cause unexpected problems.

If the Kallax shows no visible damage after drying and the joints are still secure, the shelf can continue to be used.

If in doubt, reinforce or replace it.

Hot air dries quickly but can also cause damage. Monitor closely and proceed with caution.
