Hello everyone,

I recently bought an IKEA Kallax shelf unit and plan to add doors to it. Since the unit will be placed on a rather thick carpet, I’m wondering if the doors tend to slide when opening and closing or if the carpet slows them down so much that they might get stuck.

My main concern is that the doors might not latch properly or could be difficult to open because of the soft and yielding material underneath.

Has anyone had experience with this? I’m especially interested in how Kallax doors perform in everyday use when placed on carpet, and if you have any recommendations on how to minimize potential issues—such as using special pads, adjusting the hinges, or alternative mounting methods.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

Hello fudobla,

generally, Kallax doors do not slide on carpet unless the carpet is extremely smooth. They are more likely to jam if the hinges are incorrectly adjusted or if the unit is not level. I would first adjust the hinges and, if necessary, place small feet under the unit.

Hello fudobla,

I will address your concern in more detail, as there are several important factors to consider.

The Kallax frame itself is quite sturdy, but on carpet, especially if the pile is very high or soft, the base does not sit evenly. This can cause the entire shelving unit to not stand perfectly vertical.

A slightly tilted shelf directly affects the functionality of the doors: On the one hand, the hinges on Kallax are not able to perfectly balance the weight and position of the doors, which can result in sticking or difficulty closing. On the other hand, on carpet, the flexible surface can cause weight shifts, making the doors rub more against the edges.

I recommend first checking with a spirit level to see if the shelving unit is completely even. If there are uneven spots, shims or thin wooden plates under the feet, which grip well on carpet, can help. Alternatively, there are special anti-slip pads for furniture designed to prevent slipping on carpet.

The hinges also have adjustment screws—these should be carefully fine-tuned so the doors neither scrape nor catch. If the problem is more about the doors sliding open or loose, check whether the magnetic catches are functioning properly, though Kallax rarely has sliding issues caused by these.

What type of carpet do you have, and how high is the pile? This makes a significant difference here.

I hope this helps. If you like, I can also send you a step-by-step guide for adjusting the doors.

A slightly crooked shelf directly affects the operation of the doors:

I agree with that. However, I would add that the carpet floor itself is often underestimated. Not every type of carpet offers enough stability.

It would be interesting to know whether a carpet with poor cushioning (that is, very soft and thick) is more likely to cause the problem.

What about the material quality of the hinges? Ikea usually uses simple components here, sometimes made of plastic. These could give way more under certain stresses or wear out, which increases the jamming.

Does anyone have precise experience on whether replacing the hinges with more robust metal hinges can help? Could that work better in the long run, especially on uneven or soft floors?

Hello fudobla,

I had the same issue where the Kallax doors slightly stuck on my carpet, especially when closing. My carpet is quite thick and has a somewhat fluffy pile.

In my case, it helped to stick small self-adhesive furniture felt pads under the unit. These lay well on the carpet and provide a more stable base, preventing the unit from shifting. This significantly reduced the door sticking.

I also fine-tuned the hinges with a small screwdriver so they sit slightly further away from the frame. This made the doors noticeably easier to open.

Another useful tip is to check if the unit’s support on the carpet is evenly distributed. With Kallax units, individual feet can often be adjusted if there is any wobbling.

If you don’t mind the longer explanation and would like, I can send you more tips for the setup. You’re definitely not alone with this problem!
