ᐅ KALLAX Doors Swing Open Immediately After Installation – Installation Error?

KiedenHello everyone,
I am currently facing an issue with my KALLAX shelving unit: after installing the doors, they immediately come off the hinges the first time I try to open them. It seems as if the installation was fundamentally done incorrectly or there is a fault preventing the doors from functioning properly. The doors are attached using the supplied hinges, and I have followed the instructions as far as possible. However, the mounting does not appear to be secure enough, so the doors do not latch correctly.
I am therefore interested to know if anyone has experience with a similar problem or if there are common installation mistakes with KALLAX doors that cause them to fall off the hinges so quickly. Are there any tips or tricks to securely and permanently attach the doors?
I would like to solve the issue without too much effort, preferably without having to dismantle the entire structure again. Thanks in advance for your advice!

The doors swing outward immediately after installation – is this a mounting error? This is a common issue often caused by improperly engaged hinges. I recommend the following step-by-step check:
1. Position the hinges precisely: Make sure the metal plate on the frame is correctly seated and secured with screws.
2. Half of the problem lies in the locking mechanism: KALLAX doors often have so-called click mechanisms in the hinge – make sure they are fully engaged!
3. If the hinges are properly mounted, check if the hinges themselves are damaged or deformed. Sometimes the ends are bent, which weakens their hold.
4. When fitting the door, ensure it is correctly positioned and do not force it into place.
5. Final step: inspect the thickness of the shelf side panel – it needs to be load-bearing and not too thin; otherwise, the hinges will be unstable.
Common mistakes:
- Screws too loose
- Incorrect hinge alignment
- Hinge not fully locked
If you follow these steps, the door issue can usually be resolved. Otherwise, feel free to get back in touch!

Often the final click is missing here. That may be true, but I don’t think that alone explains why the doors pop off immediately. KALLAX doors are actually quite sturdy. I’d be interested to know if the original manufacturer has improved the hinge design or if there is a production defect.

Check the thickness of the shelf walls – they need to be load-bearing and not too thinThis is also a point that is mentioned too rarely: the stability of the shelf backing or the areas where the hinges are attached is crucial. If the walls give way easily or are made from poor-quality material, even a properly mounted hinge won’t hold.
Overall, I’m surprised no one has considered the possibility that either the screws don’t grip properly in the panel (e.g., if it is a soft particleboard) or that the screw holes are already damaged because they were used for test fitting beforehand.
All in all, I can understand if someone has trouble with the assembly, but I see more factors at play here than just missing the simple click.
Hey Kieden and everyone else 👋
That really sounds frustrating when the doors keep falling off right away – that can definitely ruin an afternoon! 😅
From my experience, sometimes the hinges can be a bit tricky and just need a little attention and an extra click 😉. Usually, the issue is that the hinge mount isn’t fully snapped into place. IKEA may seem straightforward, but with moving parts, they sometimes require a bit more pressure or the correct angle.
If the hinge itself isn’t the problem, then tightening the screws properly is usually key. Maybe even using some specialized tools to ensure nothing is loose.
It might also help to hang the doors completely first, then slightly loosen and retighten the screws. Definitely keep checking for any wobbling in between.
Fingers crossed the issue can be fixed quickly – doors that don’t close properly but fall off right away are just no fun. 🙂

The whole thing seems like the assembly was not done correctly from the start or that a mistake has occurredThat is very likely. With the KALLAX doors, it is important that the metal plates on the carcass are installed correctly and that the doors are then hung with enough pressure. If the click is not heard or felt, the hinges are not securely in place.
Also check that all screws are fully tightened. Fine adjustment can help by slightly shifting the hinges until the fit is perfect.
Good luck!
