Hello everyone, I recently got an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit with doors, but unfortunately, the door keeps falling off as soon as it is even slightly loaded or when I open and close it normally.

The door is correctly installed, all screws appear tight, and there are no bent or obvious defects on the hinges or the door itself. Despite this, the problem remains that the door eventually detaches and falls off, which is of course very annoying and can also be dangerous.

Has anyone experienced this problem before and can offer some advice on how to fix it permanently? Is there perhaps an adjustment under the hinges that I might be overlooking, or am I maybe using the wrong screws?

I would be very grateful for detailed solutions or tips on how to reliably secure the door.

Hey, I’m familiar with the issue with KALLAX doors! Often, it’s caused by the small metal tabs on the hinges that usually need some adjustment or realignment.

Usually, the door hangs a bit crooked or the hinge isn't properly seated in its slot anymore. A simple fix is to take the door off, slightly adjust the hinges, and then reinstall it. While doing this, make sure the screws are fully tightened so everything stays secure.

If that doesn’t solve it, sometimes adding small felt or rubber bumpers can improve the hold, preventing the door from slipping out.

Good luck, it’s usually an easy fix! :-)

Hello pacesar62,

I understand your issue very well, as the doors on KALLAX shelves can sometimes feel a bit unstable due to their design. It’s important to know that IKEA hinges often use position-dependent locking mechanisms.

First, please check whether the small plastic or metal clips on the hinges are still intact, as these ensure the door locks into the correct position. If these are worn or bent, the door won’t stay secure.

Your note that all screws are tight is important — however, it’s still worth checking whether the screw holes in the wood hold firmly. In some cases, these can become worn or enlarged over time, which may cause the problem.

Additionally, I recommend paying close attention to the direction and angle of the hinges during installation; the top and bottom positions are often mixed up. The door must be inserted at a slight angle and then pressed until the hinge locks in place.

If none of this works, simply buying matching replacement parts is sometimes the best solution. IKEA sells the hinges individually.

I hope this helps you.

Interesting point. But how certain can we be that the issue isn't due to an inherent weakness in the furniture piece itself?

I mean, KALLAX is an affordable shelving unit that isn’t necessarily designed for frequent door movements with the highest precision.

One might suspect that the design of the door mounting is generally flawed and that the problem arises from undersized hinges or insufficient fixing methods.

Do you have any evidence or experiences confirming that a simple realignment after extended use really works long-term and that there’s no need to resort to custom solutions?

If not, the discussion about realignment might be more symptomatic rather than addressing the root cause.

That is generally true, but it should be noted that most issues with the doors usually result from installation errors or material fatigue.

If your door keeps falling off the hinges, one possible reason could be that the screws in the wood-based panels are too loose or that the hinge is not properly installed.

My advice: use strong, durable screws; if the holes are worn out, it helps to fill them with wood glue and then reinsert the screw.

I also recommend mounting the hinges only in the designated locations and avoiding improvisation, as this can further reduce stability.

With some patience and careful repair work, a securely functioning door is definitely achievable.

I had the same problem myself, and at first it was pretty frustrating. But with a bit of patience and careful rechecking of the hinges, I was able to secure the door again. Sometimes it takes two or three tries to find the right position and the correct screws.

Even though it can be annoying financially at first, I can only recommend using the original IKEA screws, as they are precisely matched to the material thickness.

If you like, we can go through the individual steps again—I’d be happy to help you with a small checklist of what to check exactly. That helped me stay calm and find the cause step by step. 🙂
