ᐅ Kallax door does not close completely – have you tried planing it down?

Hello everyone, I recently got a Kallax shelf from IKEA and noticed that the door doesn’t close properly. It sticks on the right side and therefore doesn’t sit flush. I’m considering lightly planing the door because the veneer or the edge might slightly protrude. Has anyone experienced something similar? Is it enough to sand the door lightly, or do I possibly need to adjust the hinges? I’d prefer not to change too much on the shelf, but of course, the door should close cleanly without sticking. I’d appreciate hearing about your solutions!

Hello GAGIK, I hope the tips above have already helped you! To briefly summarize the topic from the beginning:

A door that does not close properly usually has the following causes:
- Hinge incorrectly adjusted (sideways, height, or depth misalignment)
- Door edge or cabinet frame glued or deformed
- Design-related gap that is too tight

If you decided to sand the door edge: take your time and work very carefully, preferably with fine sandpaper. Reinstall and test step by step in between.

Sometimes it also helps to slightly loosen all hinge screws first and then align the door before tightening them securely.

Have you already checked if the cabinet is perfectly level? Even small deviations can affect how the door operates. If you want, let me know—I’m happy to help further.

In addition to the previous discussion: Planing or sanding the Kallax door is technically possible but should be done with caution due to the surface and construction.

Important:
- Sand only the door edge that is actually sticking.
- Use fine sandpaper (grit 150 to 220).
- Continuously check the fit after each small sanding step.

Alternatively, for small quantities and when a perfect finish is crucial, a sanding block applying even pressure can be used.

I agree with other contributors that you should first fully align the hinges and then remove material minimally. Excessive material removal can affect the appearance, which is especially noticeable on white Kallax doors.

It’s really frustrating when a piece of furniture that should be simple doesn’t work properly.

That exactly describes my experience too. I also had a Kallax door that wouldn’t close properly, and it was really annoying. After some trial and error and carefully sanding down one corner, I was able to fix the issue. It feels great to repair the furniture without causing any damage.

I fully agree with that. Sometimes it also helps to loosen all the screws on the hinges before sanding and then re-adjust them afterward. This often makes the door fit much better right away.

I definitely wish you good luck, GAGIK – it’s worth sticking with it! 🙂
