ᐅ KALLAX leaning after switching to a different wall – What could be the reason?

licamill6624 Feb 2020 18:37Hello everyone,
I recently moved my KALLAX shelving unit to a different wall. I noticed that it now stands crooked, which was not the case before. By the way, the wall is smoothly plastered and there is no noticeably tilted surface that I can see just by looking.
My specific question is:
What are the most common or typical reasons why a KALLAX shelving unit might suddenly stand crooked after being moved to another wall? I have already checked whether the floor is uneven, but the irregularity does not explain the degree of tilt. Could there be construction features or assembly faults that should be considered?
I look forward to your assessments and tips on how to get the shelving unit straight again without having to completely reassemble it asymmetrically or undergo extensive modifications. Thank you in advance!

Hello licamill66,
Thank you very much for the detailed and thorough question! The issue of a KALLAX unit being uneven after moving it to a different wall is actually more complex than it might seem at first.
First of all, it’s important to check the condition of the wall: even if the wall is smoothly plastered, it can still be slightly slanted. A measuring tape alone is not always reliable here. It’s best to use a spirit level or an angle measurement app to determine the actual angle of the wall.
The floor can also play a role: even if the unevenness seems minimal, a slight slope at the location can be enough to cause the shelf to stand unevenly. I would recommend padding the base under the KALLAX feet with small felt or plastic pads — this can help compensate for minor level differences.
Another point to consider is the manufacturing tolerances of the shelf components themselves. KALLAX elements are fairly sturdy, but individual panels can have slight warping, especially if moisture or loads are involved. When moving the unit, this can affect its alignment.
Finally: how was the unit secured? Is it freestanding or fixed to the wall? KALLAX modules are generally freestanding, but if they are not screwed together or firmly secured, they can be more prone to tipping or appearing uneven.
Could you please describe if the unit was fully assembled, if you had taken it apart, and the exact condition of the surface it is standing on? It would also be interesting to know if the shelf is on casters or feet.
Best regards,
Wyatt

Can it be slightly tilted?Exactly, the wall is often not perfectly straight.

Pad with felt or plastic underlaysThis usually helps quickly and easily.
Also check if all shelf components are securely and correctly assembled.
Great that some good suggestions have already been mentioned here! 🙂
I recently had a similar issue myself, and what helped me a lot was attaching small self-adhesive furniture pads under the feet of the shelf. That adjusted the level perfectly within seconds!
Also, the wall at the new location might not be perfectly vertical — this is often only noticeable when comparing directly or when checking the shelf with a long tool like a spirit level.
I would also recommend precisely aligning the shelf again at the front and back, so check the back panel and adjust slightly if needed. Keep in mind that the KALLAX is not necessarily designed for super-precise positioning but rather for flexibility.
So: don’t get discouraged, with some small tools you can really fix a lot! Good luck, and feel free to reach out if it doesn’t work out 😉
