ᐅ KALLAX corners bump into baseboards – how to handle this?

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelf from IKEA and want to place it in a corner of my living room. Unfortunately, the shelf hits the existing baseboard, which prevents it from being pushed directly against the wall, leaving a small gap.

My question is: How can I work around this issue when KALLAX shelves meet baseboards? What solutions or tricks are there to position the shelf as close to the wall as possible without sanding down or removing the baseboards? Should I consider shortening the shelf legs, modifying the baseboards, or are there practical alternatives you would recommend? I would really appreciate your experiences and tips!

Regarding the technical aspect: KALLAX shelves have a clearance of about 12 cm (5 inches) including the shelf legs.

Baseboards are typically 1.5 to 3 cm (0.6 to 1.2 inches) high and 1 to 2 cm (0.4 to 0.8 inches) deep. Depending on the overlap, the shelf may therefore get stuck on the bottom corner.

Precise solution: Take exact measurements and, if necessary, shorten the shelf legs by the difference. Accurate marking and safe cutting techniques are recommended.

Alternatively, adjusting the baseboard is technically possible but can be more complex depending on the wall covering and material. The visual effect should also be considered.

Therefore, I recommend—if modifying the legs is possible—to prefer this option.

Using spacer pads or similar only slightly increases the distance and usually does not solve the fundamental problem.

In summary: insist on measurement accuracy, careful execution, and decide based on the desired appearance.

I think it’s helpful for anyone struggling with KALLAX and baseboards to start with a few basics: The KALLAX back panel, which is 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) thick, can be used to slightly offset the shelf from the wall without any visual drawbacks.

A small gap of 5 mm (0.2 inches) between the shelf and the wall can be discreetly hidden with a narrow spacer, such as a thin strip of wood or some felt.

Slightly lift the back panel off the floor – raise the shelf minimally by placing small felt or rubber pads under the feet

I have implemented this idea on two KALLAX units, and it was practical as well as visually acceptable.

Ultimately, how the shelf will be used is also important. If the shelf must sit flush against the wall, a neat edge adjustment is recommended; otherwise, small gaps can be quite manageable.

I hope this helps.
