Hello everyone,

I am currently considering modifying a Kallax shelf unit from IKEA to store cutlery and kitchen utensils. The idea is to divide the compartments accordingly and possibly add inserts or small drawers to create better organization.

My question is whether this really makes sense—whether a Kallax shelf unit can be practical and functional as a cutlery organizer, or if the rather square compartments and size might result in inconvenient storage. Has anyone had experience with this or can share insights on how well it works in everyday use?

I’m especially interested in ease of use, visibility, and how suitable it is for different sizes and types of cutlery. I would appreciate any tips, ideas, or alternative suggestions!

Kallax is more suitable for larger items. While you can store cutlery in it, the compartments can quickly become cluttered. It would be better to use small drawers or boxes that fit into the sections.

I find it interesting how you plan to approach this. Sometimes unconventional solutions are the best—especially when you stay creative.

For me, it’s mainly about usability, clarity, and how well it works for different sizes and types of cutlery.

That’s an important point. I could imagine that with a few clever dividers or small boxes in the drawer, you could actually keep things organized. However, I’m also a bit concerned that a lot of cutlery might shift around in wide compartments or that it might not be as easily accessible as in classic cutlery trays.

Maybe it also depends on how much cutlery you have? If it’s just a manageable collection, it could work well. With a larger collection or a lot of different types of cutlery, it could get more complicated.

This is brilliant! 🙂 I love creative IKEA hacks, and turning a Kallax into a cutlery shelf sounds really exciting!

There are so many different inserts you can buy or make to divide the compartments appropriately. I only see advantages here: you have everything in view, you can organize it neatly, and you can even mix different materials or styles.

That’s exactly what I meant – small drawers or boxes that you customize to your needs are great! It makes the shelf both unique and functional.

I’d simply give it a try, buy a few inserts, and see how it works in daily use. The DIY approach is often the most enjoyable!

I have some concerns about this idea. Kallax shelves are primarily designed as open cube compartments and usually lack the depth needed to store cutlery in an organized and space-saving way.

That sounds good, but the problem is the lack of compartmentalization for small items. Cutlery typically requires very fine dividers to prevent mixing, which is easy to lose in Kallax compartments.

It would be more practical to use purpose-made inserts that fit securely inside the Kallax and divide the compartments into smaller sections. Otherwise, it quickly becomes impractical and cluttered.

I would also question whether the weight and handling of the shelf with many inserts might become an issue, especially with frequent use. An alternative, optimized storage solution with dedicated drawer systems could be more effective here.
