Hello everyone,
I recently handled my IKEA KALLAX shelf quite roughly during a move, and unfortunately, one of the side panels got significantly damaged. Specifically, there is a deep crack running through the MDF wood that affects the overall stability of the construction. My question is whether anyone has experience with repairing this kind of damage on a KALLAX shelf? If so, how and with which materials could this piece of furniture be effectively restored without losing too much stability or appearance?
I would prefer not to buy a new one entirely, but stability is important to me. Does anyone have tips on special adhesives, fillers, or reinforcements? Thank you very much for your help!

First of all, a brief note: You can repair damaged MDF panels quite well, as long as the damage is not completely broken through.
1. Thoroughly clean the broken edges from dust and dirt.
2. Apply wood glue (preferably PVAC glue) into the crack and clamp it tightly with screw clamps.
3. After it has dried, you can apply wood filler (suitable for MDF) to even out any irregularities.
4. Sand and treat with appropriate varnish or paint.
Common mistake: Not securing properly, which causes the repair to fail.
Additionally, to reinforce, you can attach small brackets on the backside if the back panel is also damaged.

one of the side panels got quite damagedOh no, that already sounds like a real moving disaster! 🙂 But the KALLAX is really sturdy, so you can fix quite a lot. My recommendation: just try using wood glue and some clamps.
A bit of sanding, then painting or covering, and no one will notice anymore. If you want a more thorough repair, try small wooden dowels for extra stability – or simply secure the back panel with anti-slip mats to keep everything steady.
It sounds worse than it is; the KALLAX loves these DIY rescue missions! Good luck! 🙂
Hello kima61,
you’re in the right place with your question. It’s true that MDF parts like the side panel in the KALLAX can be repaired effectively, but you should proceed carefully to ensure stability.
If you don’t have large cracks or missing pieces, wood glue is the best option to hold the fiber structure together. Then secure it well, ideally with clamps or at least with tension straps. However, if you have gaps or broken pieces, I recommend a special MDF wood filler that sands smoothly and restores an even surface.
Don’t forget to apply paint or varnish to the visible side after the repair to make it look good. A little tip: if matching the color exactly is difficult, white or light-colored contact films are a good alternative if painting is too time-consuming.
I hope this helps! 🙂

The crack can be repaired well with wood glueI consider that too simplistic as a general solution. While the crack in the MDF can be joined with wood glue, the material properties of MDF cause its strength to significantly decrease under stress.

attach small brackets on the backThat seems more reasonable to me. I would additionally reinforce the side with metal brackets or even a thin aluminum profile to prevent future breakage. Otherwise, the cabinet will become unstable sooner or later.
Furthermore, one should consider whether a full repair is economically sensible or if a replacement part would be more cost-effective and sustainable. Simply gluing usually only delays the problem temporarily.
