ᐅ The Kallax unit attracts dust – do you have any anti-static solutions?

LolosiHello everyone,
Some time ago, I bought a Kallax shelf unit from IKEA and have noticed that it seems to attract dust almost like a magnet. This effect appears to be especially strong in the open compartments. I suspect static electricity plays a role, causing dust particles to be attracted. Does anyone else experience this issue? Are there effective antistatic solutions or tips for keeping the shelf dust-free without having to clean it constantly? I would appreciate well-informed advice, particularly regarding products or methods that have proven effective for plastic furniture. Thanks!

my assumption is that static electricity plays a role, causing dust particles to be attracted. The theory sounds reasonable, but have you checked whether the indoor air is particularly dry due to heating or other environmental factors? Dry air significantly increases static buildup. Sometimes the problem isn’t primarily caused by the shelving unit itself, but rather by the indoor climate.
Are there any special coatings on the Kallax that might amplify this effect? Have you tried treating the shelf with an anti-static spray? However, such products can leave residues that may attract more dust. I would recommend focusing on regular mechanical cleaning and using a humidifier, but maybe someone else has different experiences to share.
Hello Lolosi,
I find your observation very interesting because the material of the Kallax shelf is usually MDF with a plastic coating, which often becomes electrostatically charged, especially when humidity is low.
A proven method is to use special anti-static cloths or a slightly damp microfiber cloth for cleaning. These often noticeably reduce static buildup and help keep dust away for longer.
Additionally, using a humidifier to increase the relative humidity in the room to at least 40-50% works very well against static electricity.
If liquids are used: anti-static sprays should be applied sparingly and precisely, as they can leave chemical residues. With frequent use, they can even slightly damage the surface.

It is also important to ensure that no purely synthetic fiber cloths are used for cleaning, as these actually increase static charge. Microfiber cloths with a small percentage of natural fibers are better suited.
Additionally, consider not placing the shelf directly next to electronic devices with strong electromagnetic emissions or near radiators, as this can increase static buildup.

Does anyone else have this problem? Are there effective antistatic solutions or tips on how to keep the shelf "dust-free" without constantly wiping?Hello!
I had the same issue with my Kallax and can confirm that humidity plays a significant role. Additionally, the plastic surface tends to build up a slight static charge, which attracts dust.
I use a small humidifier in the room and wipe it down every 1-2 weeks with a slightly damp microfiber cloth, which helps reduce static buildup. I also bought an antistatic spray from IKEA, which I apply sparingly—not daily, but as needed.
In my opinion, it’s hard to keep the shelves completely dust-free, but this combination works well to prevent them from looking like they haven’t been cleaned for weeks.
Hopefully, this information is helpful!
