Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and am now about to assemble it. My specific question is: Which screws—in terms of type, material, or coating—are easiest to screw into the pre-drilled holes during assembly of the KALLAX, without requiring too much force or causing the wood to split?

I’m mainly looking for the right option that makes assembly smoother while maintaining stability. If anyone has practical experience with assembling it or recommendations regarding screw choice for the KALLAX, I would appreciate any helpful tips.

The discussion about Torx versus Phillips head screws is certainly valid, but regarding KALLAX, I would focus more on the materials: MDF used in IKEA shelves tends to chip more easily at the edges. Therefore, screws with pointed tips and partial threads, preferably zinc-coated, are truly optimal.

Pre-drilling further reduces the risk of chipping and should be considered even when using Torx screws. Torx can make driving screws easier, but it is not essential.

I always use standard chipboard screws, 4x40 mm (4x1.6 inches), partially threaded. No pre-drilling, just screw them in directly. They fit well and the wood holds securely. I've also tried Torx screws, but in my opinion, the difference is minimal.
