Hello everyone,

I recently bought a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA and am now about to assemble it. My specific question is: Which screws—in terms of type, material, or coating—are easiest to screw into the pre-drilled holes during assembly of the KALLAX, without requiring too much force or causing the wood to split?

I’m mainly looking for the right option that makes assembly smoother while maintaining stability. If anyone has practical experience with assembling it or recommendations regarding screw choice for the KALLAX, I would appreciate any helpful tips.

I would recommend standard Spax screws. The ones with a Phillips head go in quickly and cause very little splitting. Important: do not use screws that are too thick.

Regarding screw selection for KALLAX, I can note the following: The wood used in KALLAX is a coated panel similar to MDF. Due to its composition, screws with a partial thread and a sharp, pointed tip are ideal. Zinc-plated chipboard screws with a partial thread reduce friction slightly and make screwing easier.

Additionally, the screws should not be too long, as the material is somewhat brittle. Pre-drilling is usually not necessary but can be helpful if you are unsure, especially with older or untreated models.

That is exactly the key. I have had good experiences with galvanized chipboard screws, which drive very well into MDF boards.

Hey, great topic! 🙂 I just assembled my KALLAX with Torx screws – really convenient! They grip very well and provide excellent torque while screwing in. They turn much more easily than regular Phillips screws, and the wood didn’t split at all for me. Definitely recommend them! Give it a try, it’s totally worth it! 🙂

I think the hype around Torx is a bit overrated. Yes, they have better grip, but for such a simple shelf, you really don’t need special screws; regular chipboard screws work just fine and are cheaper.

Also, I wonder if the effort to switch screw types for the KALLAX actually makes sense, or if it’s just a matter of convenience.
