Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and unfortunately noticed that several screws started to strip, pull out, or simply wouldn’t tighten properly during assembly. The bookshelf is mainly intended for books, so it will be loaded with quite some weight.
My question is: How can I prevent the screws in BILLY bookshelves from stripping or pulling out, especially on the side panels or at the joints? Are there specific techniques, screws, or additional aids that provide long-term stability?
I have considered using individual dowels or reinforced screws, but I’m unsure what is practical and truly effective. Your experience or tips would be very helpful!
Thanks in advance!

A technical solution I can recommend is using so-called self-tapping threaded inserts or screw-in threaded inserts for particleboard.
These can be screwed into pre-drilled holes and provide significantly more holding power than regular particleboard screws. Screws can then be screwed into these sturdy connectors.
Additionally, it is advisable to pre-drill with a smaller drill bit to avoid splitting the material, and to secure damaged holes further with wood glue.

I also recommend regularly checking the screws to ensure they remain tight, as particle boards can slightly expand or contract with changes in moisture.
For those who like to experiment: When assembling BILLY, you can pre-drill the holes using a narrow strip of fabric or paper tape to protect the wood material from tearing too much.

You can also pre-drill the holes on BILLY using a narrow strip of fabric or paper tapeThis is indeed a useful technique, often applied with furniture screws. Simply stick a layer of tape on the spot before drilling. This reduces the chipping of the particleboard.
I would also like to add that using screws with a larger diameter, if possible, improves strength. But be sure to maintain a consistently secure fit!
I hope these tips help you.
