Hello everyone, I’m considering using an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit as a pedestal for a washing machine to raise it slightly and create extra storage space underneath. My specific question is: Can a KALLAX shelf support the weight of a fully loaded washing machine permanently without damage or tipping over? Are there any experiences regarding its stability, material fatigue, or safety risks? I plan to place a washing machine weighing about 70 kg (154 lbs) empty plus the water load (around 10–12 kg (22–26 lbs) extra) on it. The shelf must withstand the forces during the spin cycle and must not wobble or break. Has anyone tried something like this or can assess whether the KALLAX is suitable to be used as a washing machine pedestal?

Hello Minku, thank you for your detailed question. Basically, the KALLAX shelf is not designed as a platform for such heavy appliances, as the maximum load capacity per shelf according to the manufacturer is usually only about 13-15 kg (29-33 lbs). This means that the weight of a washing machine should not rest on a single shelf but ideally be distributed across the entire structure. The KALLAX side panels and shelves are made of pressed wood with a melamine coating, which is not built to support heavy loads.

If you want to use the shelf as a platform, it should definitely stand on a completely level surface and possibly be reinforced with additional supports. The risk of wobbling or shaking during the spin cycle should also not be underestimated. Another option would be to place the washing machine on stable wooden boards or concrete slabs and use the KALLAX next to it or separately for storage.

Regarding material fatigue: deformations can occur after a short time, especially if the shelf is occasionally lifted or moved.

I would rather say no. If you definitely want to use KALLAX, I recommend additional reinforcement or a sturdier base underneath.

I would not recommend using the KALLAX as a platform. The shelving system is not designed to support such loads. It is better to use a more solid construction made of wood or a dedicated washing machine base.

For clarification: The KALLAX is primarily designed for use as a shelving unit. Manufacturer specifications for maximum load per shelf are generally between 13-15 kg (29-33 lbs). The overall structure might support the weight of a washing machine, but there is a risk due to dynamic loads (spin cycle vibrations).

Material fatigue and deformation can accelerate due to the constant weight and vibrations.

Conclusion: From a technical perspective, this is not ideal and involves safety concerns. If it is used nevertheless, additional reinforcements and a flat, non-slip base are mandatory.

This point is especially important because wobbling can cause damage to the washing machine and the platform.

I tried using KALLAX as a platform – it only worked because I placed the washing machine on small wooden blocks inside to better distribute the weight. Otherwise, I would not recommend it. The main risks are stability and shaking during the spin cycle.

In short: No KALLAX units for washing machines. Damage will occur sooner or later. Instead, use a sturdy pedestal designed for this purpose.
