Hello everyone, I’m considering using an IKEA KALLAX shelf unit as a pedestal for a washing machine to raise it slightly and create extra storage space underneath. My specific question is: Can a KALLAX shelf support the weight of a fully loaded washing machine permanently without damage or tipping over? Are there any experiences regarding its stability, material fatigue, or safety risks? I plan to place a washing machine weighing about 70 kg (154 lbs) empty plus the water load (around 10–12 kg (22–26 lbs) extra) on it. The shelf must withstand the forces during the spin cycle and must not wobble or break. Has anyone tried something like this or can assess whether the KALLAX is suitable to be used as a washing machine pedestal?

A load of 70-80 kg (154-176 lbs) is definitely too much for KALLAX, especially under dynamic stress from spin cycles. It’s better to build or buy something more robust.

I consider KALLAX unsuitable as a washing machine pedestal. Wood-based materials of this type are not designed to withstand the static and dynamic loads imposed by a washing machine. They usually lack the necessary rigidity and durability.

Exactly, many people underestimate this – vibrations not only lead to material fatigue but can also damage the washing machine itself or create unsafe conditions. If using KALLAX is absolutely desired, at least a non-slip mat and additional reinforcement with wood or metal should be installed. However, a platform specifically designed for this purpose is generally the preferred solution.
