ᐅ Kallax as a rolling bench is not stable – does anyone have any ideas?

Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Kallax shelf to use it as a rolling bench. Unfortunately, I found that the construction is not really stable in this setup – the shelf wobbles and doesn’t feel safe when sitting on it or leaning against it. I suspect that the weight distribution with the casters and seating use is different from what the shelf was originally designed for. Does anyone have experience with this or know effective solutions to improve its stability? I want to avoid just gluing everything together or adding unnecessary reinforcements. Tips for assembly, suitable casters, or alternative ideas are very welcome!

Is there a recommendation on how many and at which positions these [cross braces] are most effective?

Ideally, at least three cross braces are recommended: one placed horizontally across the back to prevent twisting, and two more positioned beneath the seat surface—each close to the outer sides of the frame. You can secure them with screws and wood dowels to achieve optimal stability.

I screwed the casters directly to the bottom of the frame

This is the most common mistake: the attachment points on the chipboard are not strong enough to bear the load. It’s better to fix the casters onto an 18–20 mm (about 0.7–0.8 inch) thick plywood panel, which you evenly screw to the underside. This panel distributes the weight more effectively and prevents the screws from pulling out easily.

Finally, I recommend considering the seat padding as well. A thin foam layer on top of a plywood panel provides comfort and protects the shelf from point loads.
