Hello everyone, I recently bought an IKEA Besta shelf and am now considering how to best put it on casters to move it around the room easily. My specific question is: Is there a simple and stable way to install casters on a Besta shelf without making major modifications to the furniture or compromising its stability? I’ve seen that casters are available for purchase, but I’m wondering how to attach them most effectively, whether special adapters are needed, or if there are alternatives like casters with mounting plates. It would be great if you could share your experiences or tips regarding the selection and installation of casters on a Besta.

Hi, the simplest solution is to use furniture casters with mounting plates that you screw onto the underside of the Besta unit. It is important that the casters are strong enough to bear the load and are securely attached. Sometimes the pre-drilled holes are sufficient, otherwise you will need to drill small holes.

Regarding stability: IKEA Besta units have a base panel with enough surface area to attach casters using mounting plates. It is best to use casters with a diameter of at least 50 mm (2 inches) to ensure good mobility. It is advisable to choose casters with locking brakes to secure the shelving unit in place. Before drilling, precise measurements should be checked, as the positioning of the screws is important for load-bearing capacity.

Absolutely right, but honestly: who wants to keep locking and unlocking the brakes all the time? You could also consider a glider option, where you simply slide the furniture but only lift it slightly when needed. Casters are convenient, but with IKEA furniture, the assembly is often not designed optimally for dynamic loads.

Thank you for the tip! Are there designated holes or specific spots on the Besta where the casters should be attached? I’d like to avoid drilling too many holes purely for aesthetic reasons.

That’s a good point. How strong is the load capacity of the lower sections of the Besta? Are they reinforced internally enough to prevent damage from using casters over time?

Yes, on the underside of the base unit there are mounting points intended for assembly. However, these are not specifically designed for casters but for feet. They can be used effectively if you use slim furniture casters with suitable mounting plates. The load capacity relies solely on the base panel and the side reinforcements. It is important to mount the casters straight to avoid uneven load distribution.
