Hello everyone, I have a question that has been on my mind for a while, and I hope someone here has experience or a helpful idea. I own an Ikea Pax wardrobe system, where the back panels are no longer acceptable due to damage or wear. I am particularly interested in whether it is possible to completely replace these back panels—not just minor repairs, but a full back panel replacement. I would have expected Ikea to offer replacement parts for this, but my research so far hasn’t led to a clear answer. Does anyone know if the back panels are available separately or how to replace them properly without having to disassemble the entire wardrobe or improvise? I look forward to any tips, experiences, or advice on how to approach this professionally.

Are you sure that a complete replacement can be done easily without negatively affecting the stability or overall appearance?

It is true that the back panel plays an important role in stability, so when replacing it, attention must be paid to material quality and proper fastening. Depending on the model, Ikea does offer replacement back panels, but availability can be limited and reordering may vary individually. The cabinet should be braced during the replacement—for example, by securing the side panels firmly—otherwise removing the back panel may cause deformation. Many people succeed without significant negative effects if they proceed carefully. Additionally, back panels are usually not glued but nailed or stapled, so they can be removed with careful effort. In short: yes, it is possible, but it requires care and no rushed actions.

I completely replaced the back panel of an older Pax wardrobe. You can have affordable MDF boards cut to size at a hardware store. It is important to take precise measurements and secure the panel with small nails or staples. Painting it white or in the original color makes the replacement nearly invisible. So yes, it is possible – you just have to work carefully.

I really appreciate how detailed the discussion already is here. Regarding replacement: I once retrofitted my old PAX wardrobe and replaced the back panel with a custom-made version. All you need is patience and a bit of precision – plus carefully securing the wardrobe during the replacement. It almost feels like a small DIY challenge 😉. Important: The back panel not only provides stability but can also hide cut edges, so it's worth putting in a little extra effort when cutting and painting.

Regarding the question: Yes, the back panels of Ikea PAX wardrobes are generally interchangeable. If original parts are not available, cutting MDF boards to size and painting them is a reliable alternative. The back panel is usually only nailed in place, so it can be carefully removed and replaced. Stability is not compromised as long as the material is suitable.
