Hello everyone,

Some time ago, I purchased various PLATSA furniture pieces from IKEA, which are made of wood or wood-based surfaces. Now, I want to make sure I take proper care of them to avoid damaging the surfaces and to extend their lifespan.

I have a few specific questions: Is there a particular care guide for IKEA PLATSA wood surfaces that I should follow?
- Are certain cleaning cloths or products especially recommended or best avoided?
- Should I completely avoid harsh cleaning agents or moisture?
- Are there any tips from IKEA or from your own experience on how to gently remove stains without leaving marks?

I would really appreciate detailed advice or tips, as the correct maintenance for wood often differs significantly from other materials.

Thank you in advance!

Use a soft, dry, or slightly damp cloth for cleaning. Do not use abrasive products or harsh cleaners. Avoid using excessive water on wooden surfaces.

That sounds reasonable, but I would like to understand why IKEA does not provide a specific care guide for PLATSA wood surfaces and instead only refers to general wood care instructions.

Are the surfaces really that durable, or is there a risk, especially with furniture that has a thinner coating, that damage or discoloration could occur from using the wrong cleaning products?

I think there is often a lack of detailed information on what is specifically recommended for the PLATSA material and where the limits are.

Does anyone have experience whether the usual wood care advice is sufficient or if there are particular risks when cleaning too often or using inappropriate products?

Exactly, I agree with you. The wood panels in PLATSA are not solid wood but are covered with a plastic foil or melamine coating. Because of this, the surface is sensitive to harsh cleaning agents and abrasive sponges.

I have always cleaned my PLATSA surfaces with a soft microfiber cloth and a little mild dish soap. It is important to immediately wipe them dry afterward with a dry cloth—this keeps the surface looking nice and prevents water spots.

And obviously: never use strong chemicals or abrasive cleaning products, as this will quickly make the furniture look worn.

It may sound a bit cautious, but that’s the best way to keep these pieces looking good for a long time. And a little care never hurts, not for furniture and not at all! 😉
