Hello,

we have a covered terrace and would like to install 6 recessed LED downlights in the ceiling. I was wondering what IP rating the lights should have. Is IP44 sufficient, or would it be better to use IP65? The lights definitely won’t be exposed to rain, but I’m not sure how it is with moisture in general.

IP44 should be sufficient for ceiling installation. At the mounting height, you won’t have major dust issues, and exposure to water jets is unlikely as well. Near ground level, at least IP65 is recommended.

Thank you very much for your response! In the meantime, I also did some research and found that IP65 would definitely be overkill. In fact, it is said that even IP23 is perfectly sufficient directly under the ceiling.

If the ceiling is always dry and clean anyway, I would choose the cheapest option and not pay attention to IP ratings.

I’m not exactly sure if there are regulations, but I have also installed some LED floodlights under the roof overhang that can never get wet. I didn’t use IP44 lights there, to my knowledge they are more like IP23. However, I made sure to use proper sealing for the wiring, and the junction box is even IP65, even though it is located inside under the roof overhang.
