Hello everyone,

In our apartment (newly built), we had some walls painted in color.

As you can see in the photos, the walls were not painted all the way up to the ceiling. There are clearly visible uneven edges in some spots more than others.

Do I have to accept this, or is it considered a defect?

Thank you very much for your help!

Best regards,

Jegor

You made a big mistake here by painting colored walls all the way up to the ceiling.

The transitions between the wall and ceiling are never perfectly straight, so this creates an uneven and inconsistent look.

I would now tape off the wall and paint a white strip along the top.

Example
Room interior: large gray wall, white door frame on the left, and TV screen at the bottom of the picture.

Tomtom is right about that. It looks the same in our case, but unlike you, it doesn’t bother us.

You can see that the plasterer wasn’t the best, so the painter has little chance to improve it. If he had painted a bit higher, it would look like the ceiling was painted too.

That would probably have been even worse.

This is simply one possible way to finish the transition to the ceiling. You could also paint beyond that point, but then it may give the impression that the ceiling is painted too high, as bookstar already mentioned.

Our painter followed the suggestion from @tomtom79, and we are satisfied with that. I wouldn’t be happy with something like in the pictures either—it doesn’t blend in. However, adding the contrast stripe afterwards isn’t as simple as just painting over it with white if you want it to look neat. You have to work carefully with both colors.

Ever painted something in color yourself? That’s an art, including taping off. It will never be perfectly straight.
