Hello everyone, our house is slowly taking shape, and we are now considering how to finish the walls. Originally, we thought about applying felt plaster to the walls. However, our construction manager advised against it. Considering the expected settlement cracks, he recommended covering the walls with painter’s fleece and then painting them. Does anyone have experience with this?

Felt plaster on the walls

You probably mean a floated plaster, most likely a floated lime-cement plaster. Where’s the problem? It definitely won’t be perfectly smooth like a baby’s bottom, but it has a somewhat more rustic appearance. We have lived for 5 years in a new build with floated lime-cement plaster finished to quality level Q2, and there were no cracks. We did the same in the new house.

Floated lime-cement plaster at Q2 and simply painted—done. It looks good, doesn’t have the sterile look of a perfectly smooth wall, and if you ever need to repair a small damage, no one will notice. Perfect for us.

Best regards,

Andreas

I know two newly built houses from 2016 (completed in Q1 and Q2, respectively), one with a felt plaster as described here and one with glass fleece wallpaper. On the first house, cracks are clearly visible today at the ceiling-to-wall transition. On the second, these cracks are not visible (they may exist, but are likely concealed by the glass fleece).

Personally, I don’t like plastered walls; I find them too rough and hard.

Just painted?!? I’m lazy and can’t believe this is still done in new builds nowadays, just like a colleague who wallpapered with textured paper—definitely not my preference.
We had the entire surface fully skim-coated with Q4 finish, and then a painter’s fleece in white or color will be applied over it.

We have pure lime plaster with white lime paint on top. I’m not discouraged by cracks (here, fine hairline cracks at the corners where the wall meets the ceiling); just a little paint on the brush, touch up, done. Also, I’m the only one who notices these hairline cracks.

I don’t want anything on the walls that seals them airtight... ewww, that really bothers me.

What did you pay for Q4?
