Hello everyone,

The electrician has prepared everything for the installation of a satellite system. Now I need to remove one roof tile and mount the satellite dish there. The electrician is asking for about €600 (material, installation, and alignment).

On one hand, I’m reluctant to climb on the roof myself, but on the other hand, it bothers me to pay €600 for this. I can get the dish, LNB, multi-switch, and mast for around €200.

Is it complicated if you’ve never done it before? What do you think, should I avoid doing it myself and have it professionally installed?

For the rafter holder, I always recommend the Hercules model and nothing else. You’ll only regret saving money when the reception is constantly interrupted because the pole is unstable.

The tile is from the manufacturer and can probably be found cheaper anywhere else, maybe even from the roofer.

Adjustment is tricky if you’ve never done it before, but if it’s only about setting it to position 19.2 East, it should be doable.

As mentioned before, the equipotential bonding is crucial… and here you can’t avoid a professional. Otherwise, your insurance might be void if something happens.

Why do you need a professional for the equipotential bonding (EP)? Just run a 16mm² (0.052 in²) conductor to the EP busbar and that’s it...?

Even though it seems simple, there are many mistakes that can be made... it already starts with choosing the cable... for example, 16mm² (0.025in²) fine-stranded cables are not permitted, and there are other pitfalls as well...

That's true – it's important to get informed. But that's the case with many things.

Many systems don’t even have a residual current device (RCD) installed...

I think I will have a professional install the dish. Today, I checked again in the utility room. At the "cable drum" that is connected there, I found 5 network cables as well as 9 "white" cables. They look like satellite cables to me. (See photo)

Now I’m completely confused. Am I understanding this correctly: the cables are somewhere up in the attic. The satellite dish is then installed there. All 5 wall outlets are already installed. I thought these would be supplied from above, from the dish?! Or does a multiswitch first need to be installed in the utility room?

Or are these cables for cable TV?! I just don’t get it.

Well, the professional should know what to do, I just want to understand!

These are satellite cables.
And yes, you run 1 to 4 cables from the dish to the multiswitch, and then distribute them to the various outlets.
