Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet doors, which have started to squeak more and more when I open or close them. It’s not a loud noise, but it’s annoying enough that I’m looking for a solution. The doors are only about two years old, and I assume the issue is with the hinges, but I also suspect it could be related to the mounting or possibly insufficient lubrication. Has anyone had experience with how to best fix squeaking cabinet doors? What tools and materials do I specifically need, and are there common mistakes to avoid? I would appreciate a detailed guide or at least some tips to resolve this problem long-term.

Hello Lutz48, I can fully understand how annoying squeaking can be. I experienced the same until I first understood the cause of the problem. In my case, the issue was that the doors would sometimes rub slightly due to humidity, which temporarily stressed the hinges. My solution was to gently open and close the doors daily to prevent any sticking, and additionally, to lightly treat the hinges with silicone spray every few weeks. This significantly reduced the squeaking during everyday use. It’s certainly not a permanent fix, but it personally helped me make the noise more bearable.

Remove the door, clean the hinges, use silicone spray, and adjust the door. The problem is usually a dry mechanism or incorrect alignment.

There are indeed reports from users about quality issues, especially with cheap Metod hinges

Well, that’s always relative: cheap at Ikea usually means that design and ease of installation are prioritized over high-end quality. For the prices offered, the hinges are perfectly acceptable. If you want better quality, you have to invest in higher-grade fittings.

Carefully adjust the screws on the hinges; that often helps.

Exactly, that’s where I would start, and it’s quick to do.

This is an interesting practical approach that shows regular maintenance and use can extend the lifespan of the fittings. I also recommend checking that no screws are too loose or too tight when readjusting the hinges, as incorrect tension can cause squeaking. Proper door alignment is important as well, otherwise unfavorable leverage forces can occur.
