Hello everyone, I have a problem with my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet doors, which have started to squeak more and more when I open or close them. It’s not a loud noise, but it’s annoying enough that I’m looking for a solution. The doors are only about two years old, and I assume the issue is with the hinges, but I also suspect it could be related to the mounting or possibly insufficient lubrication. Has anyone had experience with how to best fix squeaking cabinet doors? What tools and materials do I specifically need, and are there common mistakes to avoid? I would appreciate a detailed guide or at least some tips to resolve this problem long-term.
I think the whole discussion about squeaky doors is often a bit overrated. Sure, it’s annoying, but you don’t always need complicated repairs to fix it. Often, simply removing the door, thoroughly cleaning the hinges, and then applying a good lubricant like WD-40 or silicone spray is enough. Why jump straight to a complete repair? Sometimes less is more. By the way, the supposed "poor quality" of Ikea hinges is, in my opinion, a myth. With proper maintenance, they are actually quite durable.
Hello Lutz48, I can help you with that. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to eliminate squeaking in Ikea Metod doors:
- Step 1: Remove the door by releasing the hinge mounting plate from the frame bracket using a flat screwdriver.
- Step 2: Clean all visible metal parts of the hinges with a clean, lint-free cloth. Make sure to remove any dirt residues from the guide sleeves as well.
- Step 3: Then apply a high-quality lubricant, such as silicone spray or graphite powder. WD-40 can be used for cleaning but is not suitable for long-term lubrication.
- Step 4: Carefully apply the lubricant to all moving parts of the hinge, using just enough so it does not drip.
- Step 5: Rehang the door and gently test if the squeaking has stopped.
Important: Avoid greasy or oil-based lubricants, as they attract dust and often worsen the problem over time.
If you try this, feel free to get back in touch if you have any questions!

I consider the supposed "poor quality" of Ikea hinges to be a myth. I think this statement deserves a closer look. There are indeed reports from users about quality issues specifically with cheap Metod hinges, which can start to squeak or loosen over time. However, these issues are often related to usage intensity and installation quality.

Avoid greasy or oil-based lubricants, as they attract dust and often worsen the situation in the long run. I fully agree with this. For a long-lasting result, it would also be useful to check if the hinges might have mechanical problems—for example, worn springs or over-tightening, which could be the cause of the squeaking. Simply lubricating in such cases usually does not help much.
