dananHello everyone,
I recently assembled an Ikea Metod kitchen unit with drawers and am looking for proven tips and tricks to upgrade the drawers in order to significantly improve their usability. Specifically, I am interested in how to optimize the drawer slides, as currently they feel somewhat stiff and are not as quiet as I had hoped.
Additionally, I would appreciate advice on extra inserts or measures to reduce rattling and improve organization inside the drawers, for example, recommended divider systems or non-slip mats. Perhaps someone also knows solutions to increase the load capacity of the drawers or make them operate more smoothly with a soft-close feature?
I look forward to practical suggestions based on personal experience or reliable DIY tips that go beyond the standard instructions. Thanks in advance!

Hey danan,
I can totally understand your question—Metod drawers definitely have some room for improvement! My favorite tip is to loosen the screws on the drawer slides and apply a bit of grease (e.g., silicone grease). This usually makes them smoother and quieter. 😎
I also like to use simple, self-adhesive non-slip mats on the drawer bottom; they stop cutlery or spices from sliding around and also help reduce noise.
When it comes to organizing, Ikea offers some modular inserts you can mix and match, or you can go for universal plastic dividers that can be cut to size.
Last but not least: a tip about load capacity—yes, the metal slides can handle quite a bit, but they work even better if you avoid overloading drawers with full-extension slides, which can be retrofitted. There are DIY suppliers offering high-quality runners that glide more smoothly and support higher loads.
Give it a try and feel free to report back! 😉

to improve the Metod drawers, I recommend first checking the basic mechanical functions. Often, tilted mounting brackets or partially engaged drawer slides are the cause of stiffness.
For upgrades, using Teflon or silicone grease is especially suitable since it doesn’t attract dust and makes the drawers operate smoothly. Here, less is often more – too much lubricant can become dirty.
To prevent rattling, you can stick felt pads or thin rubber strips to the inside walls of the drawers. They noticeably dampen the movement.
Hard plastic organizers or wooden strips are helpful for customizing the interior – some users even build custom inserts to use the available space more efficiently.
If you want to increase load capacity, you can alternatively replace the Metod slides with heavy-duty full-extension slides from third-party suppliers – these are often significantly more durable and run more smoothly.
If you like, I can send you links to suitable models and installation guides from my collection. Otherwise, feel free to ask any questions; I’m happy to help.

I recently assembled an Ikea Metod kitchen module with drawers and am looking for proven tips and tricks to upgrade the drawers to significantly improve their usability.Building on the original question, I would like to suggest a systematic approach, as a well-thought-out optimization achieves the best results:
- First: Check the installation. Verify that the drawer slides are perfectly aligned. Any misalignment here causes friction and difficult movement.
- Second: Adjust the damping components. The Metod drawers come with basic soft-close mechanisms that can be replaced if defective. Upgrading to higher-quality damping systems (e.g., BLUMOTION) can greatly enhance handling.
- Third: Organize the interior. Custom-fit inserts optimize space usage. Homemade wooden inserts or modular plastic dividers are recommended.
- Fourth: Soundproofing. Applying foam rubber or felt strips to relevant contact points significantly reduces annoying rattling noises.
These measures are scientifically proven to improve both the functionality and durability of the drawers. I am happy to provide more details on replacement products and installation options upon request.
