Hello forum,
I am currently planning to furnish my kitchen and adjacent dining area with Ikea Metod cabinets and have a specific request: I want to install the cabinets with sliding doors to save space and create a modern look.
Since the kitchen is rather small, the cabinets should take up as little floor space as possible while emphasizing the modern appearance through the sliding doors.
I am especially interested in which construction methods or combinations to consider to maximize storage capacity, how to best integrate the sliding doors (material, track system, installation), and any tips for a well-thought-out, modern look using the Metod cabinets.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations on the best way to implement this? Are there practical solutions for room layout to prevent the cabinets from looking bulky or taking up unnecessary space despite the sliding doors?
I look forward to your insights and suggestions!

Additional technical notes:
- The maximum door width for Ikea Metod sliding doors should not exceed 60 to 80 cm (24 to 31 inches) to avoid problems with smooth sliding.
- For a space-saving solution, a double-track rail system is helpful, allowing two doors to slide back and forth.
- When purchasing sliding door systems, pay attention to the load capacity of the rails and doors; height adjustability is important.
- During installation, ensure a precise fit of the side panels and carefully select the sealing profile used to avoid unwanted noise.
- The interior fittings should be modular, for example, with removable baskets or compartment dividers, so you can use the storage space flexibly.
In general: You achieve a modern look by combining materials (aluminum, glass, matte melamine) with a consistent color scheme – less is more here.

Regarding push-to-open for sliding doors: Technically, it is a bit more challenging to implement than for hinged doors because the mechanism works differently for sliding doors. That explains a lot, thanks! I’ll go with aluminum handles then.

My advice: Use sliding doors more as room dividers or for less frequently accessed storage since they require a bit more effort than hinged doors. That’s a good point. I’ll plan the main storage cabinets with hinged doors and reserve sliding doors for areas that are opened less often.

Do you have any tips on combining upper and lower cabinets so that the overall look is harmonious and the sliding doors fit well into the room?
Sliding doors in the kitchen work well if you use narrow doors and install the tracks properly.
For upper and lower cabinets:
- use the same color for a uniform appearance
- avoid sliding doors for upper cabinets due to height
- use upper cabinets with hinged doors or open shelves
- lower cabinets with sliding doors save space
This creates a balanced and modern overall look.

Thank you all for your numerous and detailed contributions!
This is how I plan to proceed:
- Base cabinets with Metod and sliding doors up to 80 cm (31.5 inches) wide
- Wall cabinets with classic hinged doors in matte gray with stainless steel handles
- Corner cabinet with a special sliding door solution to be tested
- Sliding hardware made of metal with ball bearings for durability
- Additional interior organization with pull-out baskets and dividers
If anyone knows specific materials or sources for high-quality sliding door fittings, please share your recommendations!
I will keep you updated as soon as installation begins.
