DylanbarHello forum,
I am currently planning to furnish my kitchen and adjacent dining area with Ikea Metod cabinets and have a specific request: I want to install the cabinets with sliding doors to save space and create a modern look.
Since the kitchen is rather small, the cabinets should take up as little floor space as possible while emphasizing the modern appearance through the sliding doors.
I am especially interested in which construction methods or combinations to consider to maximize storage capacity, how to best integrate the sliding doors (material, track system, installation), and any tips for a well-thought-out, modern look using the Metod cabinets.
Does anyone have experience or recommendations on the best way to implement this? Are there practical solutions for room layout to prevent the cabinets from looking bulky or taking up unnecessary space despite the sliding doors?
I look forward to your insights and suggestions!

Hello Dylanbar,
you’ve raised an interesting topic, as the Ikea Metod system with sliding doors offers some appealing possibilities but requires careful planning and technical understanding. I would like to share a few points from my experience that are important:
- First, you should ensure that the cabinet size does not result in sliding doors that are too large. Sliding door systems with very wide door panels tend to be cumbersome and may warp.
- The running mechanism is crucial. Ikea offers sliding doors themselves, but there are also suppliers who provide overlay sliding door systems with soft-close functions. These ensure smooth operation and durability.
- Keep in mind that sliding doors always require about 10 cm (4 inches) of overlap, which means the actual interior cabinet space is slightly reduced. So plan for storage space a bit more generously.
- For a modern look, I recommend matte or satin finishes, optionally with aluminum handles or handleless push-to-open options to create clean lines.
- Layout and construction: If the space is small, you could, for example, equip corner cabinets with sliding doors to replace classic hinged doors. This eliminates the need for additional clearance space when opening.
I’m interested in the dimensions of your room to be able to give you more targeted advice. Also, are you planning the cabinets only as base units, only wall units, or both?
This would help to work out the best configuration.

Hi Dylanbar,
I find this topic really interesting! Sliding doors with Metod are great for small spaces because they don’t get in the way when opened.
I have the same setup in my kitchen and am really happy with it.
Another important point is that sliding doors require a track system, which takes up some space. So it’s better to plan a bit smaller or less deep and then work with smart storage solutions like inserts.
It’s also great that you can play with different material finishes – for example, glass or light wood textures, which create a fresh, modern look and keep the space feeling light.
If you want, I can share which sliding door options Ikea offers and what has worked well for me. 😉

Thanks for the quick responses so far!
@Palenar: The room is approximately 2.8 x 3.5 meters (9.2 x 11.5 feet), and the kitchen is L-shaped. The plan includes a combination of base cabinets and two to three wall cabinets. The corner is really tight, so I’m leaning toward a corner solution with sliding doors—mainly to minimize the opening space.
I was also thinking of smooth, matte fronts in light gray, combined with slim handles, possibly in stainless steel finish. What do you think about push-to-open for the sliding doors? It looks modern, but I’m a bit skeptical technically, especially because sliding doors need to glide more precisely than hinged doors.
@dijan: That would be great if you could share your practical experience! Which sliding door systems from Ikea would you recommend, and what should I pay special attention to during installation to ensure the doors don’t sag or become difficult to operate later?

Regarding push-to-open on sliding doors: this is technically more challenging to implement than on hinged doors because the mechanism works differently in sliding doors. Usually, special running tracks and spring mechanisms are needed, which must be precisely adjusted.
The problem is often that sliding doors become more prone to wear and may require more frequent adjustments. An alternative are well-sprung soft-open systems or discreetly mounted aluminum handles.
A tip for installation: make sure the tracks are perfectly horizontal and that the gap between the running track and door is even. A spirit level and measuring tape will be your best friends here. Even small misalignments can cause doors to rub or not slide smoothly.
For corner solutions, you could also work with half-height shelves that create organized storage combined with sliding doors. Especially with Metod, modularity is an advantage.
Would you like material recommendations for the running tracks?

I used an overlay sliding door system mounted on top of the Metod cabinets. For that, you need:
- precise installation of the tracks (key points: level and parallel)
- lubrication of the rollers after about 6 months
- regular checks to ensure all screws are still tight
Generally, I find that sliding door systems feel much more robust when made of metal with ball-bearing rollers. Plastic rollers tend to make the doors harder to operate.
My advice: Use sliding doors more as room dividers or for less frequently accessed storage, as they require a bit more effort than hinged doors. But if you like them, they look very sleek and modern and save space—no doubt about that!
And regarding appearance: Glass doors, especially frosted glass, are very trendy, lightweight, and make rooms appear larger.
