ᐅ IKEA Malm Nightstand Squeaks When Lifted – What Could Be the Cause?

Hello everyone,
I recently purchased an IKEA Malm bedside table and noticed that it makes a clearly audible squeaking noise when lifting the entire table. The sound seems to come from the lower parts of the furniture when I lift it slightly and then set it back down.
I suspect it might be caused by the connection between the individual wooden parts or the coating, which shifts slightly against each other. I’m interested to know if this is a known issue with this model and if anyone has experience with the exact cause. Maybe it’s some kind of material friction or related to the screw connections?
I would appreciate any tips on how to fix this or a more precise indication of the cause.

Thank you all for the quick and helpful feedback!
I have noted your tips and will probably tighten the screws slightly, then try silicone spray or wax on the contact points, and also test felt pads on the feet.
The nightstand is still quite new, only assembled for about 2 weeks. I think there might still be a "breaking-in period," as FELOTAU mentioned.
I will get back to you once I have tested this.

Hello An-Andre,
how are things going? Have you been able to do anything about the squeaking yet? Sometimes it just takes a bit of patience, especially with new furniture.
If the problem persists, there might be a slight unevenness in the substructure. Sometimes placing a small piece of thin felt or foam rubber underneath is enough to distribute the load better.

Have you been able to do anything about the squeaking yet?Yesterday, I actually tightened the screws a bit more and applied some silicone spray to the connecting points – that really helped! The squeaking is now much quieter, almost gone.
I also stuck some felt pads under the feet, which minimizes noise when moving.
I think it was a combination of slight play and friction between the membrane and the wood. Thanks for the tip about the "break-in period" – I believe that really applies.
Thanks again to everyone here who shared helpful information!

I think it was a combination of minimal clearance and friction between the foil and the wood.Well noticed! This is very typical, especially with particle board furniture with a melamine finish. It's great that you were able to pinpoint the core of the problem and successfully resolve it with simple measures.
