Hello,

I bought a galant corner desk (“right” version).

After assembling it, I placed a spirit level on top and adjusted the feet to make sure the desk was level (I have an older wooden floor, which has some unevenness).

So far, so good.

Then I set up my LCD monitor, and with the naked eye, I could see it was tilted (the left corner was higher than the right). I put the spirit level on again, and indeed: on the side with the shallower depth of the tabletop, it was crooked, while on the side where the tabletop is 1.20 meters deep (4 feet), it was level.

How can that be if it is the same tabletop? It should either be flat or not. At some point, I noticed that on the side where the LCD monitor stands, the aluminum spirit level had a gap in the middle above the tabletop. It rested on the left and right sides of the tabletop, but there was a gap in the center.

So: the tabletop has a “dip.”

I then returned to the local IKEA store to report this defect. Yesterday I received a new tabletop and encountered the same issue: a dip on the side where you sit. The metal frame underneath is level. When I remove some of the mounting screws between the frame and the tabletop, you can clearly see the tabletop bulging away from the frame.

When I filed the complaint, I asked if the tabletops might be stored vertically (which could explain the dip). This was denied; the tabletops are stored flat. My guess now is that although they lie flat, they might be supported only on battens or wooden strips, so the tabletop is not fully supported.

My question to you: Could you please check your tabletops with a spirit level to see if you notice any “dips”?

I’m curious whether this might be a general manufacturing defect or simply incorrect storage or handling at my IKEA store.

Also notable was that the screw holes in the tabletop did not line up exactly with the holes in the frame. Although the screws could be inserted, the alignment was not 100% precise.

Hello IRX, the issue you described is likely related to a faulty production batch or improper storage. In either case, an exchange might not help if it is done too quickly.

We use several Galant desks, including both types of legs, and I just checked quickly with a spirit level – neither the simple rectangular nor the corner tabletops show any noticeable warping beyond a fraction of a millimeter. The drill holes for the fixing screws are also quite precisely where they should be. So this is definitely not normal, especially not the large gap you mentioned…
