Hello,
I also have my desk in my living room. Now, I would like to get a shelf unit both to serve as a visual room divider and to provide additional storage space. Of course, I first looked at IKEA and came across the EXPEDIT shelf. Its dimensions are exactly what I’m looking for.
My living room has real hardwood flooring, so anchoring the shelf to the floor is not an option. Mounting it on the wall is also difficult because I have fairly wide baseboards, which means the shelf would stand free.
My concern is that the whole setup might be quite unstable. Has anyone had experience with something like this? I would appreciate any advice.
Best regards, Knut

Hi,
we always have to secure these things in the store, but at home my shelves also stand freely away from the wall. None of them have ever fallen over. Here in Heerlen, the EXPEDIT units will soon be on sale. I think it might be worth it from Frechen. Unfortunately, I can only tell you tomorrow how much cheaper they actually are.
groetjes,
alex

Hej Knut,
okay, 100km (62 miles) is a bit much. Here, the shelf with 8 compartments will cost 39,- instead of 59,- euros, and Saturdays are also very busy for us. The offer will be available in Germany as well, but I don’t know exactly when.
groetjes,
alexThanks for the information. Have a great weekend.
There are various sources for metal parts that you could use to add weight to the bottom of a shelf.
On a smaller scale, I have done this with pennies (in a Benno CD shelf), and I have also used split lead weights intended for fishing. You might consider looking into iron plates used as keel weights for boats. In my opinion, these are available in 1-kilogram (2.2-pound) pieces.
Cheap hardware fittings hidden in an Ikea linen box and placed on the bottom shelf won’t provide 100% security, but they do offer some peace of mind.
Best regards

The tip about weighting it down is pretty good – but you can also just be careful when filling it so that the heaviest books and binders or the complete edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica are placed on the lower shelves. You’ll have to bend down more, but it has the same effect as putting lead or something similar inside – sometimes knowledge really is heavier... 😉
