IKEA-Experte16 Aug 2013 14:24As far as I know, the holes are not threaded, and the screws cut their own thread. This really means applying force with the appropriate screwdriver or bit (Pozidriv, not Phillips).

We assembled our Brimnes last night. It’s true that you have to cut the thread yourself with the screw. However, it worked well—my boyfriend managed it by hand without a cordless drill.
I’ll be a bit bold and add my experience here. We had a completely different issue: right at the start, when assembling the "cross" in the middle that later separates the drawers, two of the plastic parts broke. These are the pieces you insert into the holes where the screws go, then tighten with a screwdriver.
It annoyed me because at IKEA these parts are usually metal (for good reason). Is it possible to order these parts separately? I can’t really drive 100 km (60 miles) to the nearest IKEA just because of two of these plastic pieces…
