Hello everyone,
I recently bought an IKEA Besta shelving unit to use as media furniture in my living room. Unfortunately, I have often read that furniture like this – mainly made of particleboard with veneer – can be easily damaged when exposed to moisture (whether humidity, water splashes, or condensation). My question is: How can I effectively prevent moisture damage to an IKEA Besta unit?
I am especially interested in tips that are both preventive and helpful if you already notice issues, such as swelling edges. The furniture is located in a room with high humidity – what steps can I take to significantly extend its lifespan and avoid both visual and structural damage?
Thank you in advance for your experiences and advice!

Hi Roel30,
to avoid moisture damage to IKEA Besta, you should not place the shelving unit directly against damp walls. It also helps to ensure air circulation behind the furniture.
Avoid water splashes on the surface and, if possible, do not install the shelving unit in bathrooms or very humid rooms.

Hello Roel30,
I understand that moisture is an important issue for you with IKEA Besta, as particleboard and veneer are sensitive to it. Here are some structured tips to help prevent damage:
- Choose the location carefully: rooms with consistent humidity levels below 60% are ideal.
- Avoid placing furniture directly against exterior walls, as these are often colder and more humid.
- Ensure sufficient space (at least 2-3 cm (1 inch)) between the furniture and the wall to allow air circulation behind it.
- Regularly wipe surfaces with a slightly damp cloth, but avoid puddles or wet wipes.
- Treat edges and back panels with special edge protection films or water-repellent products that do not damage the veneer.
If the furniture is already slightly swollen, let it dry immediately in a well-ventilated area, and do not use hot air drying, as this can further stress the material.
In summary: prevention through proper placement, air circulation, and careful maintenance is essential. Feel free to ask if you need advice on specific products.

Condensation formed on the back panel of one of my Besta shelves because it was placed against a poorly insulated exterior wall. Afterwards, I increased the distance from the wall and placed a small dehumidifier in the room.

I have the piece of furniture in a room with high humidityIn that case, I would recommend regularly airing out the room, especially during the summer months, and perhaps using a dehumidifier near the shelf, particularly if the room is closed up for extended periods. I know it can be inconvenient, but this helps to prevent many types of damage.
Hello Roel30,
I would like to add a few basic points. IKEA Besta furniture is mainly made from engineered wood, which is very sensitive to moisture. It is important to prevent moisture from penetrating the furniture as much as possible.
- Make sure not to place wet items directly on the furniture, even for a short time.
- If you want to protect edges especially well, you can use double-sided tape with protective films that repel moisture but are still easy to remove.
- If you notice any slight swelling, dry it immediately and, if possible, lightly sand the affected areas with fine sandpaper, then treat them with a clear varnish or wood oil.
- Regular ventilation is actually very important – even if the furniture is in the living room.
Although this requires some effort, it can significantly extend the lifespan. The main thing is to respond early to the first signs of moisture damage.
I hope this helps!
