Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into how well the Brimnes furniture series from Ikea is protected against moisture. I want to clarify this for a potential use in a somewhat more humid room, as I have read that some particleboard furniture can swell or get damaged when exposed to moisture.

I am especially interested in details about the effects of short-term and long-term moisture: for example, water splashes, high humidity, or condensation. How is the surface of the Brimnes furniture treated, and how resistant is the particleboard in general? Are there users who have Brimnes furniture in kitchens, bathrooms, or other humid environments and can share their experiences?

I would appreciate well-founded assessments, particularly regarding possible long-term damage or manufacturing details that might improve or worsen moisture protection.

The surface coating does provide some protection against occasional moisture splashes, but the edges and screw holes are often the weak points where moisture can penetrate.

Thank you for the hint! That gives me an idea – how well are the edges generally finished on Brimnes? Is there some kind of edge banding or sealing, and how is it usually attached?

I suspect that these details are crucial for moisture resistance and long-term durability. If the edges are only thinly banded and break or peel off under stress or moisture, moisture could likely penetrate easily.

I would appreciate any assessments or experiences regarding this aspect of the workmanship.

That is correct. The edges of Brimnes furniture are typically covered with a thin plastic edge banding, which does not penetrate deeply into the material. This banding is usually attached with thermoplastic hot melt adhesive.

As long as the edge banding remains intact, it provides fairly good protection against moisture penetration for the underlying wood-based panels. However:

- Small damages, wear, or detached edges create entry points for water.
- Especially the back panels or bottom edges are often less carefully banded or left exposed, making them more vulnerable.

Furniture of this category is not suitable for long-term moisture resistance because neither the panels nor the edges are waterproof. For rooms with higher humidity, it is advisable to choose specifically water-resistant or more solid furniture.

In summary:

- IKEA Brimnes furniture is made from melamine-coated particleboard/MDF, which offers protection against short-term moisture exposure (e.g., splashes).
- The surface is water-repellent but not waterproof and not designed for continuously damp environments.
- Edges are usually finished with plastic edging, but this edging is vulnerable to damage and, if compromised, can allow moisture to penetrate.
- Prolonged exposure to moisture and constant contact with water will cause swelling and damage.
- For locations with increased humidity, it is advisable to use furniture specifically designed for such conditions or to equip Brimnes furniture with additional protective measures.

Therefore, anyone planning to use Brimnes furniture in more humid areas such as kitchens or bathrooms should be aware of these limitations and take appropriate precautions (e.g., sealing, adequate ventilation).
