Hello everyone, I am currently planning a customized wardrobe solution using the Ikea Pax system and specifically want to optimize the installation of the hanging rails. My question is: What is the best way to install hanging rails in the Ikea Pax so that they are sturdy, have no play, and at the same time make clever use of space? Are there any proven installation tips or perhaps different options depending on the type of clothing (e.g., shirts vs. coats) that you would recommend? I am also interested in practical details such as screw types, mounting height, and distance to shelves. I would appreciate any experience and specific recommendations!

One way to gain more storage space is to install a second clothes rail at half height – precise height measurement is important here to prevent the clothes from pressing against each other.

Thanks, that sounds interesting. How much distance would you roughly recommend between the two clothes rails? I have shirts and jackets that aren’t too bulky. Is 80cm (31.5 inches) sufficient, or would more be advisable?

For shirts and jackets, a distance of about 90 cm (35 inches) is most comfortable to prevent the clothes from being cramped. You can also try 80 cm (31 inches) if the wardrobe isn’t very deep – this somewhat depends on the width of the garments. It is important that the rods are securely mounted, as there will be double the load on both levels. If you have more space, I would recommend going with 90 cm (35 inches).

I have two clothing rails in my Pax closet, one at the top and one about halfway down – with roughly 85 cm (33.5 inches) between them. It works great, but I make sure the clothes aren’t hanging too close together; otherwise, they can get pushed down and develop wrinkles. I’d say “more space means less stress for the clothes.”

How sturdy are the original metal brackets from Ikea? Can they safely hold heavy coats, or is it better to upgrade to stronger brackets? To me, it sounds like a standard hanging rod might bend under a heavy load – does anyone have experience with this?

The original clothing rods and brackets are designed for typical use and, when installed correctly, can support the weight of heavier coats. It is important that the brackets are properly fixed into the drywall studs or solid wood, and that a center support is installed if the rod exceeds 80 cm (31 inches) in length. For very heavy loads, I would recommend adding an additional cross brace or replacing the rod with a more robust powder-coated steel pipe. However, the original brackets provide sufficient stability for normal use.

I agree with that. Another point is that the clothing rods are not only subject to static loads. For frequent use, thicker rods and extra central supports provide better long-term stability against tipping. Especially with long wardrobes, the wall mounting of the Pax system is also important.
