Hello everyone, I am currently considering buying an IKEA Metod kitchen unit for my new apartment. My specific question is: How sturdy are IKEA Metod kitchen units compared to other kitchen units on the market, especially in terms of material quality, assembly, and long-term use? I am particularly interested in experiences regarding the durability of the connectors, whether the cabinets tend to warp or wobble over time, and how the overall stability compares to more expensive or traditionally manufactured kitchens. Thanks in advance for your insights!

In Metod kitchens, the back panel is crucial for stability. When it is properly installed, everything is very sturdy. Otherwise, parts may become loose or warp quickly. It is also important to assemble everything straight without using force. Not a solid wood kitchen, but solid for the price.

I can easily understand how uncertain you can feel when choosing a kitchen unit. I have had a Metod kitchen for about 3 years and haven’t experienced any stability issues. Of course, I didn’t use a heavy granite countertop, but a sturdy yet lighter worktop.

I was initially intimidated by assembling a kitchen myself, but with video tutorials, it went well. You just need to follow a systematic approach.

One thing I would mention: if you frequently place heavy loads inside the cabinets or if the hinges are often heavily stressed, it makes sense to check and possibly reinforce parts like hinges or base supports. This applies to almost all kitchens.

Important: When assembled correctly, the Metod kitchen is not a cheap knockoff but a well-designed modular system. It’s a good option for people with a limited budget but willing to put in some DIY work.

Metod depends entirely on the assembly. Make sure to securely fix the back panel, tighten the screws properly, and adjust the feet; then the stability will be good. Compared to other affordable kitchens, IKEA has a quality advantage, but it is not a miracle.

Do you have any tips on which joints should be checked most carefully or where typical weak points usually are?

The joints at the corners, where the cabinet carcasses are screwed together, should be carefully adjusted. This is where you’ll notice first if the kitchen feels unstable. The attachment of the countertop to the base cabinets also needs to be secure; otherwise, it can lead to tilting later on. Simply tighten everything firmly with the IKEA special screws and don’t forget the back panels.
