Hello everyone,
I am currently looking into the question: "How strong are the Ikea Brimnes shelves when fully loaded?" and I’m hoping to get first-hand experiences. Specifically, I’m interested in how the load-bearing capacity of the shelves is assessed when they are used right up to their maximum capacity, for example with books, heavy boxes, or electronic devices. Are there any known weak points in the shelves, such as sagging or material fatigue after extended use? I have already seen the official load capacity specifications but am unsure how realistic they are over time. I would be very grateful for feedback from your everyday use of the Brimnes shelving unit!

I filled my Brimnes shelf completely with books and didn’t notice any issues. Of course, the shelves do bend slightly, which is normal for engineered wood materials, but there’s no cracking or dangerous sagging.
You shouldn’t overdo it, but for normal loads it works great. Just enjoy your love of books and take good care of the shelf! 😉
P.S.: A sturdy assembly is essential.

Super nice shelf! I used it myself with photo albums; the shelves bent slightly but never cracked or anything like that.
I would say it’s unbeatable for the price range. Of course, it’s not designed for very heavy boxes, but if you fill the shelf completely with heavy items, just make sure to reinforce it.

The shelves tend to sag slightly, but this usually isn’t a problem as long as the weight is evenly distributed. Thanks for the assessment! That means I need to pay special attention to how the weight is distributed.

One trick I’ve used myself: I placed thin MDF panels underneath the shelves. That sounds interesting – is it complicated? Does anyone have tips for practical implementation?
I want to avoid the shelves bowing, especially since I plan to put many books and some equipment on them. Also, I’m curious whether the stability noticeably decreases over time – like material fatigue or deformations that only become apparent after months or years.
Thanks in advance to everyone for the helpful answers!
