While installing our shower panels, I accidentally drilled into the hot water pipe. Do the pipes need to run vertically? The house is new.

Besides the trouble of having drilled into the hot water pipe, it looks like this is a 16mm (5/8 inch) distribution line; in my opinion, this is too small to support a high water-demand shower.
Call the plumber—if you haven’t already—and have them cut and properly reseal the pipe. While you’re at it, ask if the pipe’s flow rate is sufficient to run a rain shower.
