ᐅ How reliable are the screw connections in IKEA PLATSA?

Hello everyone, I recently assembled some IKEA Platsa shelves and was wondering: how secure are the screw connections in IKEA Platsa in terms of stability and durability?

I noticed that the screws in one of the units seem quite small, even though the furniture appears fairly sturdy. Since these shelving systems are often expanded modularly and sometimes moved around, I’m interested to know if the screw connections will actually hold up over time or if it’s better to expect some rework or reinforcement.

Does anyone have good knowledge of the construction and quality of the connecting parts? Are there any experiences or recommendations on how to ensure the screw connections remain secure in everyday use without requiring too much extra effort?

The screws tend to loosen over time, so it’s normal to occasionally retighten them. This is common with furniture made from wood-based materials.

For safety: If the screws are properly installed, the connections will hold without any issues. If you want to be extra cautious, you can also install small brackets.

I am really impressed with Platsa! All the screws have stayed perfectly tight despite frequent moves! ? However, I always check and retighten all the screws after assembly. That really helps to keep it stable!

If you want it even more secure, a bit of thread locker helps

Thanks for the tip! What type of thread locker would you specifically recommend for furniture joints like these? I don’t want to use anything that makes the screws impossible to remove later, as I plan to expand the modules modularly.

Alternatively, thread lockers can be considered

Are there any proven products or brands? And what else should one pay attention to when retightening or carefully handling the connecting parts?

Medium-strength nylon-based threadlockers (e.g., medium-strength threadlocker) are recommended. They prevent unintentional loosening but can be removed later with tools if necessary.

Important:
- Use only a small amount to avoid the need for excessive force during disassembly.
- Avoid high-strength products, as these are often difficult or impossible to remove.

When retightening: Always tighten by hand only. Over-tightening can damage the threads and weaken the connection.

Then go ahead and use medium-strength threadlocker. It keeps everything tight without loosening, but it can be removed if you’re careful.

Tip: Less is more – too much threadlocker can actually cause problems. Just a tiny drop on the threads is enough.
