nonix61Hello everyone, I am planning to build an IKEA Metod kitchen myself and wanted to ask the community: How much time should one typically allow for the complete installation of such a kitchen?
I am especially interested in how long the assembly usually takes for a medium-sized kitchen with about 8 base cabinets, some wall cabinets, and the corresponding fronts, countertops, and built-in appliances.
Please consider your experiences with assembly, on-site adjustments (such as cutouts in countertops), and potential challenges like installing drawers or toe kicks in your answers.
I want to plan my time well and decide whether to tackle the project alone or with assistance. Thanks for your input!

For my METOD kitchen, which was similar in size to the one you described, my partner and I needed almost two full days, even though we’re both fairly handy. This included all steps from assembling the cabinets, hanging the doors, installing appliances, to making the cutouts for connections and countertops.
You should also not underestimate the time required to sort all the parts, because there’s a lot of small pieces involved, and if you’re not well organized, you can lose a lot of time unnecessarily.
Do you have experience assembling IKEA furniture? Especially the base cabinets and drawers sometimes require patience, and if the kitchen isn’t perfectly level, this can extend the installation time even more.
Don’t rush, and it’s better to plan a bit more time—this usually makes the process much smoother.

A typical Metod kitchen with 8 base cabinets plus wall cabinets usually requires 12 to 16 hours of pure assembly time, including preparation, installation, and minor adjustments. However, this strongly depends on your understanding of the assembly process and experience.
Important points to consider:
- Measuring before starting assembly, especially to correctly accommodate water connections or electrical outlets
- Checking the cabinets for a perfect fit; with uneven walls, adjustments are necessary
- Assembling the drawer slides, which are more complex than they seem and often require fine-tuning
- Precisely cutting the countertops (if you don’t have custom-made countertops)
- Installing the sink, stove, and electrical appliances, including their connections (depending on your skill level and confidence)
The time needed for sorting and checking the many small parts, screws, and fittings is often underestimated. I definitely recommend planning for two full days if you’re working alone; with two people, it can be much faster since many tasks can be done simultaneously.
What is your prior experience, and are you planning to do the installation entirely by yourself?

JAMESONB4113 Aug 2018 10:12For an average Metod kitchen with 8 base cabinets and wall cabinets, you should plan at least a full working day (8-10 hours) with 2 people.
Alone, it takes at least 1.5 to 2 days.
Countertops and electrical work should be calculated separately.

Sometimes it’s really valuable not to rush through but to allow thinking breaks, especially when facing tricky spots. This is particularly true when installing drawers or the panels, which can sometimes be quite fiddly.
With humor and patience, things usually go much smoother. If you’re working as a pair and can take turns, everything feels much more relaxed and you avoid the typical “I just want to finish now” mindset.
So it’s better to plan an extra day rather than too little—that really pays off in the end!
