Hello everyone,

I am currently considering getting a new Billy bookshelf from IKEA and am wondering how long these shelves typically last with normal use. By normal use, I mean using it in the living room to store books and decorations, without excessive weight on the shelves or other extreme conditions.

Does anyone have experience with the durability of the material and construction of Billy bookshelves? Are there any known weak points that tend to appear after a few years? I would like to use the shelf for as long as possible but also want to have realistic expectations.

Thank you very much for your insights and experiences!

Billy shelves typically last 8-12 years under normal use without significant damage. It is important not to overload the shelves and to avoid moisture.

The durability of Billy bookcases depends on several factors, mainly the material, the load, and the environment.

This is a common use and usually the one for which Billy bookcases are designed. The shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating. With dry indoor air and no overloading, the stability generally lasts for about 10 years. However, over time screws may become slightly loose or the shelves may wobble a little, especially if they are frequently rearranged or moved.

If you take good care of the bookcase and avoid storing very heavy items, you can definitely enjoy it for longer. If a shelf sags, it can usually be replaced.

Overall, the price-performance ratio is quite good, and the durability is quite acceptable for that.

I’ve had my Billy for almost 15 years now, and you know what? It’s still standing strong, easily holding books and all sorts of stuff (and occasionally some plants). Sure, the shelf doesn’t look brand new anymore, but it doesn’t really wobble.

I would even say: If you take care of it, it can last even longer. 😉

The important thing is not to use it as a workbench or try to overload it with heavy items. Joking aside, good stability plus reasonable prices equals a great combination.

To add some information, I would like to share a few facts that affect the durability of Billy shelves:

1. Material quality: Billy shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating. Particleboard is susceptible to moisture and swelling damage if not properly treated.

2. Load capacity: The individual shelves usually support about 30-40 kg (65-88 lbs), provided the load is evenly distributed.

3. Construction: The fasteners allow for easy assembly but can lose stability with frequent dismantling and reassembly.

4. Usage environment: Furniture lasts longer in dry, temperature-controlled rooms without direct sunlight.

Conclusion: Under these conditions and with normal use, a lifespan of 10 to 15 years is realistic. However, exceptional loads or adverse environmental factors can significantly reduce this duration.

I agree with that.
