coopertiHello everyone,
I am currently considering using the Ikea PLATSA system with drawers for a new storage solution in my living room. My question is: how functional are the Ikea PLATSA drawers in everyday use, especially regarding load capacity, material quality, smoothness of the runners, and the maximum utilization of storage space? I am particularly interested in whether they can withstand frequent use and if they are suitable for a variety of items – from clothing to heavier household goods – without compromising stability and ease of handling. Are there any experiences that could help me make an informed decision? Thanks in advance!

Hello cooperti,
I can understand your question well and am happy to provide a more detailed answer.
First of all, the functionality of the Ikea PLATSA drawers mainly depends on three factors: proper assembly, load capacity, and intended use. The drawers are generally made from relatively lightweight materials, which makes them easy to handle but also imposes certain limits. Here are a few specific points:
- Load capacity: Ikea states a maximum load of around 15 kg (33 lbs) per drawer. This should be sufficient for normal use with clothing, papers, and some household items, but caution is advised with significantly heavier loads (tools, storage jars, etc.). Heavy loads over an extended period can put strain on the slides and the drawers themselves.
- Smooth operation: The slides run quite smoothly and quietly if everything is assembled correctly. A common mistake is improper installation, which can worsen the smoothness of operation and cause sticking.
- Storage use: The design allows for versatile use; the drawers are relatively deep and wide, providing plenty of storage space. One drawback is that they do not come with built-in dividers, so internal organization is up to the user.
In summary: for everyday use, especially if you do not store excessively heavy items, PLATSA drawers are sturdy and functional. Careful assembly is key to unlocking their full potential. Hope this helps!

Hey cooperti,
I’ve had the PLATSA system in my apartment for a year now and I’m really happy with it! 😊 The drawers are very versatile, and even with daily use, everything still looks perfect.
What I especially like:
- The runners: They slide so smoothly, almost like butter!
- The design: Modern and neutral, fits almost anywhere.
- The storage space: Simply amazing, I was finally able to neatly store all my clothes.
Of course, if you put really heavy items in, you can feel it a bit. But for normal use – it’s really great! I can only recommend being patient during assembly. You also have that small instruction manual, which is best followed carefully. Good luck with your project!

I would like to share a slightly different perspective. The functionality of the PLATSA drawers is not just a matter of technology, but also depends on personal needs and room layout.
This was exactly what made me a bit hesitant at first. I was worried that the lightweight material might get damaged quickly, especially with children in the house. From my experience: the drawers are sturdy enough for clothing and toys. However, with heavy use, you should carefully choose what goes inside.
I can only confirm that. Still, it's worth asking yourself: How often will the drawer be opened, and what will be stored inside? For maximum durability, it's best to avoid combining heavy loads with frequent use.
Personally, I arranged the PLATSA drawers so that the upper ones are for lighter items and the lower compartments are more robust. This makes the system very functional for me in everyday use, even if there are some small compromises.
I hope this helps you with your decision,

Material quality is acceptable for the price.
The runners operate smoothly but must be installed correctly.
Storage space is large, with no dividers.
Not suitable for very heavy loads.
