Hello everyone,

I recently purchased a piece of furniture from the IKEA Brimnes series and am currently wondering how sturdy the shelves in this series actually are. I’m particularly interested in how resistant the shelves are to load, moisture, and scratches, as I often store heavy items in them and occasionally liquids might spill nearby.

Has anyone had practical experience with the load-bearing capacity and durability of the shelves in Brimnes furniture? Any information on the material quality and tips on how to best maintain the shelves would also be very helpful.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

The durability of the shelves in the IKEA Brimnes series depends on their intended use.

It is important to understand that the shelves are made of particleboard with a melamine coating. This means:
- The melamine surface offers resistance to scratches, wear, and certain chemical effects to some extent.
- However, particleboard is susceptible to moisture and will swell if exposed to it for an extended period.
- Loads distributed over a larger area are better tolerated than heavy, concentrated weights.

For anyone storing plants or liquids inside the cabinets, coasters or trays are essential to prevent damage to the shelves. For storing books, clothing, or lightweight household items, the shelves are very practical.

There are also variations in assembly quality depending on the individual item and batch, so it is advisable to ensure that all panels are undamaged and properly assembled when purchasing.

I have Brimnes at home and can say: The shelves are actually quite durable—at least as long as you don’t carelessly drop heavy weights on them.

A small tip: I use felt pads on the shelves inside the cabinet to protect the surface when moving boxes around.

And of course, if you place something liquid there, it’s best to wipe it up quickly. That way, you won’t get any permanent damage.

This is precisely the main point.

The shelves are designed for their intended purpose as household furniture. Anyone using them for other purposes should exercise appropriate caution.

The material is well chosen considering the price-performance ratio, but it is not suitable for professional use involving high mechanical stress.

You hit the nail on the head! 😎 Brimnes is great for the living room and bedroom, but not for heavy-duty use. Anyone who looks at it with a wink will know that. 😊
